120+ dead in Russian plane crash, including Polish president

Postby Kes » Sat Apr 10, 2010 9:32 am

News just in.

A jet carrying the Polish president, his wife, and over 120 other people, has crashed in Russia. No survivors! The irony is that they were on their way there to honour the thousands of Polish people massacred by the Russians at the beginning of WWII.

You can never really pre-empt these things, but in most countries, aircraft carrying State leaders, are maintained to much higher standards, and have a flight deck crew with higher than average abilities. So, your TV experts are probably going to hint straight away about it being a 'caused' incident.

Ah, the circle of life.

An ex-soviet union luger hits a pole and dies.

It's a shame, but I don't often see the funny side of plane crashes. Maybe because I work on the things.

Unfortunately, even if we could build planes out of kevlar, and big lumps of structural carbon fibre, I don't think we're ever going to solve the physical problems of what a human body is likely to do when it decelerates from 250 mph to zero in about 15ft, or less.

Moral of the story: Never ever think about Russian a landing, always take it slow and steady.

Czech* please!

*No need for technicaliities...it borders Poland, which simply means that it's "over there"...it's all the same to us.

I was just watching the story on the news, I don't know anything about the political side but it was clear it's a tragedy for the Polish community even over here. Very sad indeed.

Good point. I'm surprised it's not bigger news in the UK really, especially when you consider about 10% of the current population seems to be Polish.

Why should this make bigger headlines?!

Tragic as it is, it's just another plane crash. The president and most of his staff and army generals happened to be on the plane. Big deal for Poland, but not for the world.

Edit: Moral of the story: Don't put all your eggs into one basket!!!

No, I think the moral of the story is not to drop your basket in a Russian forest at between 250-300 mph, especially when it's carrying your most important egg.

It's a very big deal whenever a nation's most prominent person gets wiped out. In this case, they were on their way to a special rememberance service, and so they did have more important figures on board, than they'd usually have.

Being fair, a good percentage of inebriated Glaswegians seem to speak in a dialect similar to Polish, so it's understandable why it should seem a desirable place to settle.
