I wonder if people would have been as funny if Obama had been on the plane. 8)

I spend a large portion of my working life trying to do things that go towards reducing aircraft incidents. I find very little humour in the consequences of what happens when things do go wrong, however, in my industry, as with many others where both cause and effect can be quite traumatic, even on people not directly involved, I've become increasingly aware (and understanding of the fact) that humour is a way of trying to retain one's mental stability when the shit hits the fan.

Tragic as it is, it's just another plane crash. The president and most of his staff and army generals happened to be on the plane. Big deal for Poland, but not for the world.

Edit: Moral of the story: Don't put all your eggs into one basket!!!

If it had been an Austrian plane and Heinz Fischer was onboard, you'd probably be saying something close to the opposite of your replies in here so far.

Why? What makes you think that?

I've got no emotional connection to the president of Austria. If he died in a plane crash tomorrow, I'd be saying exactly the same thing. These things happen and tragic as they are, why should I be more upset at the Austrian president than "normal" people dieing in a plane crash?

Now if my father/mother/brother had been on that plane, it would be a completely different story.

My Polish friend was the one who told me many of the jokes on this guy I know. Attaching oneself to a nation state is nonsensical. Mourning a president or a prime minister like a family member is bunkum.

I get what your saying, but a lot of it is to do with pride for your state. A lot of people are proud to belong to taht state. therefore, when their head of state is killed like taht, they will feel a great sense of loss

As I said earlier, aircraft tasked with carrying heads of State, are usually maintained at higher standards, and have the cream of the aircrews flying them.

By better standards, in the case of the VC10's that used to carry the UK royalty and Prime minister about, if components were lifed at 3000 hours, the first 1000 would be spent on another aircraft testing reliabilty, the second 1000 on the 'primary' aircraft, ie the one used to carry the VIP, and the last 1000 would either be on a 'normal' aircraft, or written off. The quality standards are considered viable, because these are important people, hence the term VIP. The aircrews will be those with a balance of the most experience, best reactions, and those who get renowned as super safe pilots.

Whenever something like this happens involving a head of State, too right conspiracy theories come flying out of the woodwork, because where an accident is against the odds, one involving a head of State, is considerably MORE against those odds, and at the same time, you get an increased possibilty someone wants that particular VIP, or one on board that plane, in a permenatly placcid configuration.

It's an interesting point actually - I wonder if heads of state are more likely to die in a plane crash than average?
My suspicion would be that they're more likely than average, but have the same likelihood per air mile. Clearly they travel more than the average person, which increases their risk.

Having said that - I can't think of any other heads of state to have died in a plane crash off the top of my head.
