Freddie Mercury ITV Docudrama - The Great Pretender

Discuss current and upcoming Queen projects.

Freddie Mercury ITV Docudrama - The Great Pretender

Postby slightlymad1970 » Mon Aug 15, 2016 11:48 am

Looks like this is definitely going ahead for release this September to coincide with Freddie's 70th birthday. I have to admit I'm a little apprehensive about this and have no idea if it will be good or bad, time will tell. So far very little information is available as to what can be expected but it has now been confirmed John Blunt from the Australian Queen tribute band Killer Queen has been given the role of Freddie, below is a link to the article about the project.

He actually seems like a really decent guy. I'm a little less skeptical now!

Well, I cannot find any information about this being screened at all.

I wonder if it has been pulled? I remember last time that ITV (I think!) tried to make a Freddie tv movie - based on Hutton's book - Queen refused them any rights to their music (from what I read at the time); could something similar have happened in this case? Just seems strange that there is no confirmation, even though it was stated on that Australian news clip that it would be shown on September 5th.

I thought it was Channel 5, not ITV.

I doubt I will even bother with it. It will probably be the same old nonsense with Peter Freestone wittering on in the usual manner about absolutely nothing.

Read down that article further....

Lambert wants to play JIM HUTTON in the proper biopic? Really?

I want to play Jim Hutton, if it means I get to snog Ben Whishaw. :P

But seriously, Lambert, what a prat he's becoming.

Yea, that's been discussed here a few months back. I still think he was crass with that.

I think I recall this docu-drama being publicised on the official QOL site when news of it first broke, so I think it is being made with official approval/interaction. The original press info states that:

"'Freddie Mercury: The Great Pretender Revealed' will specifically look at the year 1986, the year the Queen frontman was diagnosed with AIDS."

Could this be a final and definitive official reveal that he knew during (or soon after) the Magic Tour that he had AIDS, or is this just lazy hyperbole from journalists again??

Actually, I think I may be mixing up that the show mentioned at QOL was the official 70th birthday Freddie documentary coming to ITV shortly, not the Ch5 one. The Ch5 one was mentioned on Brian's site, but that does also include 'unofficial' news items too.

I can't find it on ITV or Channel 5 listings for Monday.

Do you think it's going ahead?

Thanks,

Liam

I believe that earlier in the year there was talk of two documentaries, Channel 5 & ITV.
I think there has been a misunderstanding. The Channel 5 docudrama has been produced by ITV. Two different stations involved but only one programme.

The CH5 doc is due to be screened late October I believe.
