Are Queen planning to release their videos on 4K UHD?

Postby Hangman » Mon Oct 17, 2016 8:24 pm

I was thinking how there is no plausible reason why Queen haven't released their videos on Blu-Ray yet (or some on DVD for that matter), and then I thought that maybe it's a good thing. Maybe it means that when they do eventually release them (hopefully) they'll be released on 4K UHD.

Earlier this year the first 4K UHD discs were released and not only are they available online, but you can walk into your local branch of HMV and buy them, I've seen them in there.

The 4K UHD library is growing. Cult classic Labyrinth has just been re-scanned and re-released on 4K UHD and is apparently stunning. Could Queen's videos be given similar treatment? I'm no expert, but are Queen videos on film or tape or both? Obviously any on film would benefit the most.

I believe Queen Rock Montreal was shown in 4K somewhere, so Queen obviously have an interest in this medium. Plus Queen are known to be into their films (Flash Gordon/Highlander soundtrack anyone?). Although most people don't have 4K UHD yet, it's the future and to not release such a product on this format would be a great oversight. Anyone who's walked into a retailer of TV's lately will have seen how amazing 4K UHD is and to see Queen this way would be a dream. Thoughts?

I just can't understand that why they have not released the videos in bluray?
Even The Beatles have done so and also they tend to be really slow jumping on the bandwagon when it comes to new formats. :D

I would love to see all the promos released in 4K. That is one package I would buy.

Simple fact of the matter is that 4K would only really benefit a handful of their videos.

A large number of them were shot on PAL video, which is limited to 526 lines of resolution. That's just over half the resolution required for blu-ray, but there's potential for it to be upscaled without losing too much detail. But for 4k, we're talking double that again. Right now, with technology where it is, that's going to make a lot of them look bloody awful blown up... try watching them on a 4K television now and you'll see what a mess they look.

There are, however, a lot of their music videos shot on film - and where original elements exist, these could look stunning. However, if they're only 16mm film, then they can't look much better at 4K than they do at 1080p, so why bother?

Blu-ray, I can understand. And indeed, it's something I've been championing on here for years. AIUI, there's an option on the table for them courtesy of Rhys Thomas, too. I'd hoped the success of '1+' last year would have been enough to spur them on, but it seems not.

Others
There's the videos made for Queen Rocks, but I suspect these are all edited on SD video, and would need to be recreated from scratch. Is there a market for them? Probably not, but the tracks that don't have alternative videos might be popular.

I would prefer it if they got around to releasing rest of the videos on standard dvd first.

Then we can get back to hd versions. :)

Does seem to be a bit of a lack of appetite in the Queen camp for video collections. I think in terms of 4K, I can't help but feel the best chance we have is Montreal or Bupapest again.

Was all that really shot on film? I thought the Miracle ones were all on video.
Another One Bites The Dust I'd say is lost given how bloody awful the DVD Greatest Hits version is.
Radio Ga Ga looks shot on video, in contrast to Hammer To Fall which looks very much shot on film.
If Save Me is on film I'd adore seeing that.
Princes Of The Universe looks like film, so that could be great, but A Kind Of Magic looks like video.

The 80s were an evil time for capturing TV quality images...

Another One Bites The Dust WAS shot on film, but looks as if it was transferred to NTSC videotape and then went through a reverse standards conversion to PAL (something along those lines at least, it looks dreadful). Radio Ga Ga is mostly film, although the shots in the hover car were done on video. Save Me is on film, both the animation and the live action (although it's possible that they were edited together on video, I haven't seen it for a while). A Kind Of Magic is film elements edited on videotape, if they haven't retained the animation cels then it may not be possible to produce a HD version. The same goes for something like Innuendo.

A few more which have film material:
We Are The Champions - doesn't look great, but is still film - probably 16mm
I Want To Break Free - there's some CSO/green-screen done on video, but I think all of the elements are on film
It's A Hard Life - film
Friends Will Be Friends - film
The Invisible Man - a lot of work done on videotape, but the original elements are presumably all film
The Miracle - film
Headlong - film
I'm Going Slightly Mad - film, with some effects done on videotape
These Are The Days Of Our Lives - shot on film, with Brian added into group shots by compositing on video
The Show Must Go On - as a compilation, there is lots of material from both video and film, but it would be improved greatly if they were able to source all of the bits from their original masters
Made In Heaven Films - probably done on film, but I haven't ever watched them so I don't know!

In short, pretty much everything from The Works onwards was shot on film, but the final videos had varying amounts of work done in standard definition which would need to be re-done. I've heard that there is some dispute over the ownership of the DoRo original material, and it's quite possible that they only kept the videotape copies of some of the earlier stuff.

Exactly that - by saying 'HD Possible', it's dependent on the original material being in the vaults somewhere, and Rhys Thomas and Simon Lupton actually finding it, and being allowed to get it scanned, cleaned up, and cut back together. Even then, anything on 16mm in particular won't benefit from much more than 1080p.

Any that were mentioned as 'Semi-HD' are because they have some film elements, but large quantities of video footage too.

Factoring in the DoRo problem, and it's not surprising we're stuck in limbo...

Thanks for the replies and info, good to know what was shot on film. For me I think I would most like to see It's a Hard Life video re-scanned and released on 4K Blu-Ray, that would look amazing. Of course I would like to see them all released in the best possible versions.
