Thank God It's Christmas resurgence in popularity!

Postby slightlymad1970 » Sat Dec 30, 2017 1:58 pm

It's been nice to see Thank God It's Christmas have a resurgence in popularity this year, doing really well in Germany mainly due to streaming numbers, reaching No18 in the Top100 singles chart.

I always thought the song suffered from not having an official video featuring the band, I'll never understand why they never filmed a video as this was Queen's golden era for video's i.e. GaGa, Break Free and Hard Life.

This got me thinking as what could be done, I always thought an animated video similar to the recent All Dead All Dead video would be great, then it crossed my mind, what if the cast of the new Biopic filmed a video, even get David Mallet involved. It would tie in beautifully as the film is slated for release next Christmas, massive publicity for both the film and the song. And, yes it's a big AND if there is a Freddie version of I Dream Of Christmas in the vaults, do the same for that as well, Christmas 2018 could really be a Queen Christmas.

#182 UK is not good enough, don't think they would bother. Would be nice to have an animated video! Hopefully with the biopic coming next year there will be a new video - film related though.

I know this may be a long shot but how do those chart positions compare with last year?

I remember Brian saying about the possibility of a video for TGIC on his soapbox, I don't know, 10 years ago. Think it's permanently 4th or 5th on the to do list.

I'm not fancying the chances of a Freddie version of I Dream of Christmas. With all the opportunities and Q4 releases over the past 22 years, they'd have revisited it by now if it existed, I would think. Would be delighted to be wrong though.

I have always loved the verses in this song - not so much the chorus (same as Friends Will Be Friends) and I adore the way Freddie sings it. I think there would be no harm in adding this track - and brand new video - to any future Queen video anthology (there really should be a complete promo package on blu ray).

Honestly, I'm happily surprised by those numbers. Especially after all this time and for such a song.
Also, honestly, I'd leave the song as it is. I wouldn't mess around with it, but a video to go along with the song could be good?
TGIC has been played often every year in my house for over two decades. It's cheesy, it's schmaltzy, but I love it :D.
As an aside, it's on a songpop playlist under 80's Christmas Memories as well.

I don’t know about a video, but I do hear it regularly here in Germany. Just today, when I went with my family to a big circus, it was played both before the show and during the break. And when I was at the dentist a few days before Christmas it came on the radio, while I was lying in that dentist- chair and the doctor was rummaging in my mouth... :P It was a nice distraction , unfortunately I couldn’t hear the whole song, because the dentist‘s tool was too loud. :sly:
But yes, it’s played rather often and regularly.

The song is certainly one of the most popular Christmas songs of all time! As seen in this list (http://www.ppluk.com/About-Us/News/Top- ... as-Tracks/) of the most played Christmas songs (it is #20 in the list).

But however, in the UK this year it's rarely made any national airplay on the radio. It can still be heard on TV including children's TV shows. But it's lack of appeal on stations BBC Radio 1 and Radio 2 meant that the song wasn't heard by millions this year. :x The song though as always was heard on local radio regularly.

I think the fact that the song is not featured on any compilations in the UK means that it's not reaching any new audiences. If it was on a Now That's What I Call Christmas! album the song would be heard by people for the very first time. It's always in the downloads chart but it's by people who know the song and probably buy the song every year. Sadly, though it's not enough for the song to chart at all in the Christmas period. In fact, it hasn't charted since in 1985. (Though it's been featured on A Winter's Tale and Under Pressure - Rah Mix).

If the song had a video, then it could be played on TV, but I sadly can't see the song ever being a huge success in the UK though I would love it to be.

Ultimately because of when it was originally released, it suffers the same fate as many Christmas songs.

The same Christmas it came out, there were a couple of slightly "more" popular Christmas themed songs diverting everyone's attention. Band Aid and Wham! to name but two.

As far as over-the-top X-mas glam songs, you already had Slade and Wizzard, so I would not do it that way.

If there was ever going to be a video for TGIC in 2018, I think it would be a good idea to create an uplifting video with breathtakingly, tearjerking moments of beautiful winter landscapes, looking down on earth from space... making people reflect on what we are doing with our only planet.

Nature, mountains, cities, and people/animals in X-mas spirit. A video to make people want to see it over and over again, and the video going across the internet as a global phenomena. Nothing less than that.

A pretty decent cover version.
It seems to be a popular song to cover; a bunch of them on the tube.

A video would help it's popularity as it could be shown on TV.

I really do hope that Freddie singing I Dream Of Christmas exists as that could be released as a single. John plays on the Anita Dobson version so if he doesn't play on the original version then they could use this version. Brian and Roger can add their instruments and keyboards to the track and it could be released. Will it happen? No.

Has TGIC ever been used in a TV ad over in the UK?

Not that i've ever heard, which is unusually in the fact Queen songs are quite popular in adverts, lots of them get used.
There must be 20 to 30 well known Christmas songs re-enter the top 100 singles charts just before and during Christmas week, but Queen never make it, i've always liked it and thought it might have made the lower half, it does get played on BBC radio during the holidays.
