Serious discussion about the band known as QUEEN.

The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert Thread

Postby icy » Mon Apr 16, 2012 8:08 pm

It will soon be 20 years since the concert, so I thought I would start a thread to mark it.
It was groundbreaking in many ways for me personally.
I know there are people from here who attended, please give your thoughts on the day, which acts you liked/didn't like...basically anything you would like to talk about from the day.
To those who watched it on TV, please feel free to give your thoughts as well.
I will give mine later.
Not sure where this this thread goes, if in the wrong place, please move it.

Lots of memories from the day, queuing on the steps outside for ages, a big German guy treading on my toes  little red bows being handed out, a Freddie look-a-like trying to get the crowd singing, very expensive food and drink, feeling very emotional when Brian, John and Roger walked onto the stage, seemed someone was missing :( the show just seemed to flash by really, although i can remember all the acts and the songs they sang, and the biggest lump ever coming into everyone's throat when right at the end the big screens showed Freddie walking onto the same Wembley stage, from 1986 of course, i'll never forget that moment.

Highlights:
Extreme's Queen medley, GnR's Knocking On Heaven's Door, Brian's debut of Too Much Love, Bowie/ Ronson/ Hunter reunion, Freddie on the big screen. And finding out 2 of the banners I helped make featured on the TV and video.

Low points:
The long 7 hour wait before the gates opened, paying £6 for a burger, Robert Plant's "interesting" interpretation of Innuendo, Elizabeth Taylor's hammy speech.

Unexpected pleasant surprises:
Debut of Las Palabras, George Michael, Lisa Stansfield and a hoover.

WTF moments:
Spinal Tap taking forever to start, Bowie reciting the Lord's Prayer.

I always like to tell people I was involved in a number 1 hit as I was one in 72,000 backing vocalists on Somebody To Love :)

Those banners in the crowd were awesome, they added so much to the day IMO. Do tell which ones, Chickenfeed Babe!

Sorry, dude but you are asking the wrong lady, and I was all stern with you before I laughed :P.
When you get time, can you give your thoughts on the concert? Please?

My thoughts on it now are the same as it was back then - it was not the greatest of concerts. The first half before the Queen guys took the stage was dull and insipid with only Extreme getting things right in terms of their medley and wonderful version of Love of my Life. I didn't mind Spinal Tap too much though - despite the technical problem at the start with Nigel's guitar they handled it well in terms of ad libs. The line about cutting the set short by 35 songs was classic.

Liz Taylor was cringe inducing and the second half showed that many of the acts were simply not able to sing Queen songs. Sure they did their best but there was nothing aside from Somebody to Love that stood out as being a decent attempt. The less said about Liza Minelli and Robert Plant (especially for Innuendo) the better.

I thought Too Much Love Will KIll You was out of place at the event. Noble intentions from everyone involved but I wouldn't say it was a success in terms of saying goodbye to Freddie.

Queued very early - great atmosphere outside. Heard quite a few of the acts rehearsing from outside.

Mad rush when gates opened - got really near the front and did not move for the next 6+ hours! Stood right by the guy dressed as Freddie Live Aid - he kept on being shown on the large screens.

Amazing when BM, RT & JD walked onto the stage - what a roar!

Support acts good - massive delay setting up the Def Lepoard drum kit - made the rest of the day overrun!

Crowd really got going when Extreme played their Queen medley.

Remember them cocking up the main entrance of Queen - soon forgotten in the excitement!

I was stood next to the guy that heckled Liz Taylor - she looked right at us and said something like "no I will not get off!!!"

Axl Rose had very tight shorts on and kept standing over us with one leg on a monitor! Not a nice view!

Highlight for me was George Michael. Remember that we did not know the exact list of who was going to be there so there were a few suprises! Also Axl Rose had made some noises about Gay men I think - especially about Elton John so that was all quite tense!

When Brian built up the intro for Liza nobody really knew who was coming out - crowd were quite dissapointed Ithink! Most people thought it was Aretha Franklin.

Great great day overall. Rememeber being so close to the stage it almost appeared quite small - until I turned around and looked behind me - the size of the crowd was amazing and the sight of a full Wembley. I made a point of trying to turn around during Radio GaGa to see the sight of all those hands!

Biggest WTF was Spinal Tap - but they were very good! Still unsure to this day why they were there!

As said before - most emptional moment was when the video of Freddie came on at the end where he lifts his crown and thanks the crowd - remember it was all still very raw about him dying so recently so lots of emotion!
It's better to burn out - than to fade away!

By that point in the evening I was up in the seats about 3/4 of the way back along the stadium. Radio GaGa looked stunning, truly one of the greatest sights of my life, and when the footage of Freddie came up I had to look twice at the stage to see if he was there.

I was about level with the sound desk for the first half of the show and sang myself hoarse when Extreme played. Personally loved every minute of the day. For me, the only song I felt was a let down was WWTLF. I don't know if Seal was nervous or whether the monitoring was dodgy, but he rushed the song which lost the feel for me somewhat.

Still one of the best days of my life.
