Too Much Love from Brian or Too Much Love from Fred?!

Serious discussion about the band known as QUEEN.

Too Much Love from Brian or Too Much Love from Fred?!

Which version do you prefer of TMLWKY?

The Brian solo version or the Freddie Queen version?

Bloody good question!

Personally, on this occasion I'd go with Brian. His version has a LOT more emotion in it, and Fred sounds like he's just singing it, and not "feeling" it.

Agree.

When I first heard the Fred version (on a bootleg in 1993 or 1994 - before Made In Heaven came out) that was the first thing I thought - that Freddie sounded somewhat dispassionate.

Gives some credence to the idea that Freddie didn't care that much for it. I mean, his performance of In My Defense, which of course he didn't write either, is superb.

That said, I DO like the full band performance with the guitar solo and so on.

Let's face it, Freddie was a world class singer. He could have done the Teletubbies theme and made it sound half decent. As with most Queen songs Freddie didn't sing on, sometimes the song does sound better when the writer puts in the little nuances they felt when they came up with the words.

Compare the original version of '39 from ANATO, to the Live Killers version. Freddie brings something new to the song, but is it better than Brian's ANATO version? I personally don't think so.

Yep, that. You really feel the pain on Brian's version.

Strangely, I prefer the vesrion with Freddie. Not because Freddie was a stronger vocalist than Brian.
I think Freddie made it sound more smooth and clear.

I can't listen to this song without remembering the first time I heard it, Wembley Stadium, Easter 1992. there were 70 000 of us standing/sitting in absolute silence during the first verse and chorus before erupting in huge applause, then going back to silence again when Brian started singing again. I doubt I'll ever experience an atmosphere at a gig like that again.

Can't stand Freddie's version. He shouldn't have sung it - when he did it took on a completely new meaning given his disease, and this was unfortunate. I cringe when I hear it. Made in Heaven was a such an optimistic album which was totally unexpected by those who didn't know Queen (ok, with the exception of Mother Love - but that WAS a brilliant track).

The song is best when sung by Brian, as Dee said - you can really feel his pain when he sings it - straight from the heart.

You never know.

When Fred died, I said to myself "Well, that's my interest in music down the pan!"

It wasn't. I still got to see some of my heroes play live again, AND I've since found some new ones.

When Bri and Rog have finally hung up the stage clothes, then the book gets shut. Until that point, you can't rule out ANYTHING.

Like both of course, but Brians version for me, loved it when he sang it at the Freddie Tribute, and was so happy when he had a big hit with it later in the year.
