Anyone interested in Queen's popularity and their place on an all time basis should read the article in the following link: http://chartmasters.org/2018/04/extreme ... -rating/6/

According to this, Queen are the third biggest act of all time, just behind The Beatles and Michael Jackson (Elvis Presley wasn't studied so far). Take some time to read this and fully digest it. It highlights what I have been saying for years and has now been "calculated" with a new formula.

Not only do Queen finish as the second biggest band of all time, but it seems that, always according to this approach, The Beatles are "only" about 20% bigger than Queen, despite selling some 80% more. Plus, a case could be made about Queen being actually slightly bigger than The Beatles outside USA overall, which I have been suggesting for years now.

I think Queen are bigger even than most fans believe they are.

Thanks for the info Hernan, I love this stuff, proving as accurately as is possible how immense and great queen are around the World, I just wish Wikipedia would update there site and stop misleading the public. That's probably why some people don't take Queen seriously as global music icons.

Thanks for this article, Hernán. It's always interesting to follow the articles by ChartMasters.
I remember that a while ago you did a similar reasoning about Queen's popularity, that is to say their generalist fans focus on or Greatest Hits or on Platinum Collection, where they can find their most famous songs. On the other hand, taking as an example The Beatles, Pink Floyd or Metallica, fans have to buy more albums if they want to listen to their most famous hits.
Changing speech, Queen are having good numbers in the United States thanks to the albums' sales. Both Greatest Hits and Platinum Collection are selling +1,000 copies a week. And in the next few months, I expect a big increase as to the albums and to the streaming units, thanks to the release of the movie trailer and thanks to the movie début this november.

Some data from the United States:

over the last 8 weeks, Greatest Hits has sold 10,591 copies (without streaming and digital tracks), while Platinum Collection has sold 9,437 copies in 7 weeks, even if the last week is not counted, otherwise it would reach 10,000 copies as well. Combined they have sold more than 20,000 copies.

Slightlymad thanks. Some interesting figures there. On chartmasters it puts Led Zeppelin ahead of Queen based in pure album sales. Yet the CSPC total puts Queen ahead. I'm astounded at the Beatles having sold 34 million in the UK!

For a long time we have often thought that with the movie release, there would be a great increase of the sales. Now with the trailer release we are having a taste of what can happen in the month of November. There has been a good increase in the digital market: Bohemian Rhapsody on Spotify is having about 500/600,000 listens a day. Good also Another One Bites The Dust and Don't Stop Me Now numbers. Also the ITunes market is doing well, in particular in the United States, where we have 11 Queen's songs in the Top 100 Rock Song chart. Also Platinum Collection has entered the top-50 and Greatest Hits is in the top-100 in the USA Itunes chart. In addition, things havem't been negative until this moment, because both Platinum Collection and Greatest Hits in the USA have sold more than 20,000 copies each in 2018. Next week they will probably have a good increase.
Let's see if with the movie release also a new compilation will be published, but I expect a good success for the singles, especially in the streaming market.
In conclusion, I think 2018 can be a very good year for Queen both in terms of sales and of popularity, and in November we'll have the most important peaks.

I agree Loris1985. In fact I think this year will be the biggest worldwide for Queen's popularity since 1995 with the release of Made In Heaven. It will probably also roll-over to 2019 as well IF the film gets awards - eg- Oscars, Baftas, etc. Plus then further sales from the film being released onto Blu-Ray, DVD and eventually streaming sites like Netflix, Amazon Prime (if they buy it) and SKY, US TV network, etc.

Just saw this:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-44206075

It says:

'Sony is buying a controlling stake in EMI Music Publishing, giving it control over two million songs by artists from Queen and Carole King to Alicia Keys and Pharrell Williams.
The $2.3bn (£1.7bn) deal will make Sony the world's biggest music publisher.
Sony's publishing business already includes 2.3 million tracks, including the Beatles catalogue.
Sony chief executive Kenichiro Yoshida said streaming services had led to a "resurgence" in the music business.
"We are thrilled to bring EMI Music Publishing into the Sony family and maintain our number one position in the music publishing industry," he said.
"In the entertainment space, we are focusing on building a strong IP [intellectual property] portfolio, and I believe this acquisition will be a particularly significant milestone for our long-term growth."
Sony is raising its stake in EMI Music Publishing from 30% to 90% by buying the stake held by Mubadala Investment Company.

Sony also unveiled its business strategy and financial targets for the next three years on Tuesday.
The Japanese giant said it would continue to focus on electronics, entertainment and financial services.
The hardware business - which includes home entertainment products, mobile communications and imaging and camera products - is expected to generate the most cash in the coming years.
In April, Sony reported net profit of 380bn yen for last year, a seven-fold increase on 2016.
Almost all of its divisions saw an improved performance, but sales in the PlayStation unit jumped almost 300%.'

I thought Universal owned the rights to Queen's music. Or did Universal bring EMI Publishing under its own brand?

This week Greatest Hits is at #1 in the Billboard Catalogue Albums Chart in the United States, selling 2,000 traditional albums. While it has sold 11,000 units counting the Tea£Sea method (that is to say streaming + digital tracks).
Bohemian Rhapsody this week has had 4,700,000 streams and has sold 4,000 downloads.
Another One Bites The Dust has had 3,300,000 streams and has sold 2,000 downloads.
We Will Rock You has had 2,700,000 streams and has sold 3,000 downloads.
We Are The Champions has sold 2,000 downloads.
Under Pressure has sold 2,000 downloads.

So only these 5 songs have sold 13,000 downloads in the United States this week.

https://www.billboard.com/articles/colu ... ock-charts

It's a good moment also for We Are The Champions in Italy, as this week it has been certified Platinum having sold 50,000 copies between streams and digital downloads.

LONG LIVE THE QUEEN

Queen’s Greatest Hits rose to #1 on the Catalog chart on June 2, finally reaching the pinnacle in its 620th chart week. It was the only album among the top 10 for overall weeks on the chart that had not yet reached the top spot.
