A team of eight of us practiced once a fortnight (dropping down to once a month), with a lead weighted coffin. We were on that detail for two years. Being in the air force, we'd have been the ones putting it on, and taking the coffin off an aircraft. The extent of our responsibilities was senior politicians, and members of the Royal family dying overseas. We were told at the time that the lead lining was to do with hermetically sealing the body in the coffin, so I guess bugs didn't eat the body. As an incidental, Princess Margaret is the only UK Royal I know of, that's been cremated.

Here's a piece from a news article from Diana's funeral.

Many will remember the sight of the coffin decked in flowers and the royal standard flag draped over the coffin, but also the apparent weight of the coffin and how tough the job was for the Welsh guards who carried it.

The coffin bared a weight of a quarter-tonne because it was lined with lead.

It is a tradition that British royals are buried in lead-lined coffins.

However, when Diana died she was no longer married to Prince Charles and only had her title Lady Diana Spencer.

The fact that she was so famous and so loved among the public in the UK and worldwide meant that she garnered a state funeral and was given the lead coffin of a royal.

Lead coffins preserve a body for up to a year, they can be sealed airtight and slow the decomposition of the body.

Lead lining a coffin seals the coffin, it keeps out moisture and preserves the body for longer, it also makes sure that the smell and any toxins from a dead body can’t escape and harm the environment.

Woke is a political term originating in the United States referring to a perceived awareness of issues concerning social justice and racial justice. It derives from the African-American Vernacular English expression "stay woke", whose grammatical aspect refers to a continuing awareness of these issues.

So, "woke" probably wouldn't refer, or apply to right wing nut jobs.

Maybe the term has changed since Covid. Groups like Wake Up Australia are pushing Right Wing sic "freedom" events, as they believe Bill Gates brought in the Pandemic to start the "New World Order". These movements are RWNJs that are anti-Government, who believe they are #woke.

I suppose it is no longer a Right or Left moniker. However, some throw it around as an insult.

Languages evolve, don't they?

We've just been discussing that. πŸ™

There was probably a time when it just meant "not asleep", as in "That motorbike screaming past, woke me up!"

Somebody somewhere, can't think of a new word, so adapts an old one, and gives it a new spin. It then filters around the world, and gets used to insult people. Shame if anyone was stupid enough to be still using it in the old context. They have to put the word on their naughty list.

People have different opinions and we can all be very passionate about some thinks. But sometimes lines get crossed and yes, I am include myself in that.

I also think people say and do things just to get a reaction. I don't do that.

So the recent discussion 're Fairy tale of NY has got a bit heated at times. So just a pleasant request. Can we move on, put our differences aside on that issue.

This board has been here in various guises for almost 20 years and some of us have been here for most of that time. Especially in the current climate, it is somewhere we can discuss things and vent a little steam. Last thing I want it for people to think they cannot come here anymore.

That's all for now.

That's how we change the world, isn't it?

Everyone's a little bit more aware now, not to use certain words that they probably weren't using anyway. We're aware that songs are often written in the third person, and that you don't always have to be coming from the same standpoint, the character in the song is.

The point was also made that people could be hearing that song on the radio for the first time, and not be able to research it.

"The boys from the Henwire Paedy Choir were singing Galway Bay"

Catering sized cans of worms.

If the BBC were empathic to non-Christians, and scrapped Christmas songs altogether, we might be having a different discussion, like the needs of the many, outweighing the needs of the few. Very Star Trek.

woke people live in a fantasy world, kind of like the royal family. they can not possibly know the life on the streets, otherwise they wouldn't have such disconnected opinions

Bullshit action. You class me as woke because I stand up against racism and other forms of discrimination. Fine by me but trust me, I know about poverty and hardship. Trust me on that one.

The left and the right are like a clock face, from 8 o'clock to four o'clock. 80% of the population sit between 10 and 2.

I'd reckon that action's about 3 o'clock, JLP's about 10, El's about half past eight, and I'm about 12.30. If you'd put yourself somewhere else, please correct me.

We're all on the clock face, and probably have much different reasons why we are where we are.

everyone is against racism.

it's just that there are different opinions on matters, but that doesn't make you a racist. no one is born racist, but people are faced with difficulties in life, and THAT is what "racists" are opposed to. like my sister being harrassed on a bus by muslims.
