For me, it's the song placement. Party and KS were weak songs to lead of the album, IMO.

Maybe because not every album has to be one to put on to "rock out" to?

You seem to love hard rock and "blues guitar" since you mention it in nearly every post. But I think you miss one of the major points of Queen is that they weren't a hard rock or blues based band....

They were a band who could and sometimes did play in that style but (and maybe I'm wrong) one of the major draws to Queen was the ability to do so much more than they typical one note hard rock band. It's one of the major reasons I love them. I love that they CAN do a blistering hard rocker such as TYMD but then slide immediately into a gorgeous piano ballad like YTMBA. The "droning" songs you mention are probably my favorites on the album. whereas some of their hard rock tracks are among their more forgettable (even if they are still fun and I do enjoy them) tracks - it's just when they go the hard rock route they tend to be more typical and blend in with the rock bands. It's the other type of tracks that sets them out from amongst the crowd.

Too much piano? That's one of the staples of Queen!

Queen II and A Night At The Opera. That's my votes. If I could have voted for 3rd place, it would have been A Day At The Races.

I voted firmly for SHA and ANATO. The two are nearly perfect; SHA has the best sequencing of Queen's albums by far, and ANATO... well, that's ANATO.

Mine was Queen 2 for many years, but A Night At The Opera surpassed it over the years for me. Songs like love of my life and the prophet song, 39 I always go back to the most. Queen 2 is still amazing though, and still rate it high. I been on a queen 1 kick lately and that album rules as well. The first 6 albums was their peak.

Yea, Races has the Reputation from casual Queen fans as Opera part 2 but not nearly as good. Die hard fans think differently. I personally think A Day At The Races is another peak album. Almost on par with Opera. SHA is up there as well. Hard to compare these albums because they're so different from each other. The Game and Innuendo are the best albums after the 70's for me.

For the life of me, I'll never understand that. I've always thought it was better. I like the sound and production much better and the songs to be stronger. That's not taking anything away from ANATO, I just think they took it even one step higher with ADATR. I agree with the band that tey took that particular sound as far as they could and News Of The World was a perfect followup to those two albums.

Like many fans have stated, it's very hard to rank those '70's albums one over the other. I love them all, just some more than others.

My personal preference ranking would be:

Top Tier

Queen II
Sheer Heart Attack
A Day At The Races
News Of The World

They are all tied for 1st place.

After that would be:

A Night At The Opera/Jazz(tied...can't decide...yes Jazz is kind of rushed and slapdash but I love it's energy and charm)
Queen(It's in last place, but I still adore this album and marvel at it to this day)

Surprised ADATR is getting more than ANATO. I love both albums but between the two I think ADATR sounds more laboured.

Sure. I think ANATO was a more creative album and had a better, crisper sound. To me it sounds fresher and more alive and diverse that I don't think ADATR can match. Maybe even a bit over-produced in places. ANATO sounds like a band having fun creating in a studio whereas by comparison ADATR sounds like a band fulfilling an obligation of getting an album out.

Jazz feels similar. A bit 'going through the motions'. Given change of direction that followed both ADATR (NotW) and Jazz (The Game) maybe the band felt the same way too.
