Queen Greatest Video Hits

Serious discussion about the band known as QUEEN.

Queen Greatest Video Hits

Postby TheHero » Mon Jan 16, 2017 8:43 pm

I was just wondering if this DVD set was the last physical release ever of Queen music videos ? I guess the Bluray won't be released.

This wasn't the last one - Greatest Video Hits 2 was released after ;)

But you are right a Bluray of the full run of the videos is required.

Yep, I have both DVD sets. They were a great product when they came out. Never understood why no Blu-Ray came to follow up. Maybe youtube is the reason ?

It's only "the last" until the next one comes out.

UMG haven't put out any compilations of the Queen videos, so this is a market they'd obviously like a "go" at.

As they would be fairly proactive in this area, you can only assume the hold up is from the band's end. To quote the intro to one of those songs... God works in mysterious ways.

Hmm.. then I hope the band decide that they want to get them re-released on blu-ray.

I might be the only one here, but I would actually love to see an updated version of "Rare Live - A Concert Through Time And Space". New content, but with the same cover artwork, because it is simply awesome! The title itself is also the best ever!

If they're not adding a third, and there's arguably not enough video material to do it unless you count concept videos post-Freddie that got later attached to some songs (and I'd rather they didn't) then they should bolt on videos such as Headlong, Innuendo, IGSM TSMGO and TATDOOL onto the re-release.

Maybe also solo stuff for which videos exist such as IWBTLY, Great Pretender etc.

A lot of the videos were shot on film so lends itself to Bluray in enhanced resolution. Maybe they are going back to those original negatives and cleaning them up behind the scene which can be a tedious and time consuming job. Especially when you have nearly 4 hours worth of footage shot from by different studios. Plus you have to make sure that you have the correct sources too.

The Beatles did with 1+ and it was a huge success so Queen should do it too.

You are not alone. I have stated exactly the same thing before on here. I know many fans did not like it at all (mainly to do with the editing, I think), but I loved this release at the time and would love to see it done again.

Saying that, does anyone remember the shit flying around over the aspect ratios?

In an ideal world, what with the storage capacity of bluray, they could put the videos on there in both the original aspect ratio, AND tailored for widescreen, and put both the original stereo mixes AND 5.1 remixes. That way they stand a chance of pleasing most people.

Another vote for a Rare Live reissue. I loved it and as said above, the artwork was fantastic.

I would buy a BluRay set in a heartbeat, but the million dollar question is are they even remotely interested in this? If there was at least some hint that they're working on it but it's going slow -- that would be appreciated, I think...

I think A compilation complimenting some sort of hits compilation would be great at some point in time but the bulk of the short promotional films should be on individual super deluxe editions of each l.p.!!! Having SOME bonus "short promotional films" and SOME behind the scenes and or documentary stuff could be fine but hopefully QUEEN + Adam Lambert will have a few studio l.p.s out before something else is done...

If they're working on it but taking their time to make sure that the videos are restored as best they can be, then I'm all for the wait. While the music sounded great on the Video Hits DVD's, the visuals left a bit to be desired. Part of it was that they used a lot of disc space to have the high-res 24/96 DTS tracks. Another part was zooming in on the videos to make them widescreen (this is especially noticeable on the videotaped videos like Bo Rhap). And the third problem was not restoring the videos as well as they could have and/or better sources having shown up since their release. But if they come up with a Blu Ray set that looks and sounds half as good as the recent Beatles 1+ set, I'll be happy to give Queen some of my money for a copy.

I've been championing this one for quite some time now. The last I heard was that Rhys Thomas in particular was working on persuading the powers that be it would be a good idea. Which, in fairness, is the only reason we got the dvds in the first place.

I think The Beatles, Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson releases in recent years have put everything into one. And tbh, that's the way I'd go with this... but perhaps with a proviso: Release a cheaper 'best of' version for Joe Public, and an 'everything and the kitchen sink' version for the die hards.
