Brian May's other guitars

Serious discussion about the band known as QUEEN.

Brian May's other guitars

From 2011.

Brian May's other guitars

Well worth a read, not sure if it's been posted here before.

Also spot the 'deliberate' mistake..!

Two mistakes I noticed straight off:

The writer saying the Chet Atkins was used on 'Who Wants to Live Forever' rather than 'Is This The World We Created...?', and that Brian says they occasionally performed 'Long Away' live in Japan (surely he's thinking of 'Teo Torriatte'?)

I have the original Guitarist magazine from which this was taken.

A couple of things missing are a Gibson Les Paul, used as a spare 73 to 76. A Gibson Flying V used as a spare in 82. This guitar can be seen on stage in pics from the 1982 US tour and also some pics of it in use after the Birch guitar was wrecked. Guild Guitars Red Special model used 84/86 as a spare and then the up dated version in 93 for Brian's Back To The Light Tour. Also Fryer Red Specials Another World tour and Queen+ shows and also Guyton Red Specials too.

He has also used Martin,Guild, Collings and Tokia acoustics through the years

He also used a Fender (Strat) early on as there's a couple of pics, but I don't know if that was his or just one provided for the session.

There's a video shot during the tour that shows all of his guitars or close because there were a lot of them. I'm pretty sure the Flying V was shown, too.

Yes but this was a video that I saw it in and a whole lot if not most all of Brian's guitars. It was taken during this QAL tour, apparently.

Jimi Hendrix also used a flying V.

I have a pic of Brian with a black one. Maybe I'll upload it, maybe not. :)

The Washburn RR-V was only used as a prop for the video shoot for POTU.

The Gibson Flying V was only used for the Hot Space US and Japan dates. The twin neck Guyton was used in 2012 for Under Pressure. Most people wouldn't have known that the recorded version of the song features a 12 string guitar

Another Guitar which has been used over the last few years is another Guyton, with an F hole and no trem. The guitar features a highly figured maple top

For those who are that into knowing about such things. Brian's RS guitar was designed with an F hole but was never cut.

Brian also used a Gibson Firebird (though it wasn't his) on a couple of 'Works' tracks, and had a Baldwin Bison as well as an Epiphone Crestwood in 1975 for 'Opera' rehearsals but probably not on the record. The Danelectro Longhorn seen on the 'Jazz' gatefold sleeve was also his, but he apparently never used it for the album.
John hated Hot Space. Frederick's favourite singer was not Paul Rodgers. Roger did not compose 'Innuendo.' Witness testimonies are often inaccurate. Scotland's not in England. 'Bo Rhap' hasn't got 180 voices.

The original RS or one of the copies?

This may be the Gibson because the headstock looks like one of theirs or it could be someone else. The photo is not clear enough to tell for sure.

The f-hole was part of the design of the original RS, in the Red Special book it shows drawings with the f-hole, and even a different pickup configuration and bridge design if I remember right.

Yes, the original design featured two pickups, a different switching system, the F hole and a different bridge trem design.

The finished guitar featured three pickups of the type shown on the plan, these were built by Brian but were replaced by the three Burns Trisonics that are still fitted.
