Queen-releases on RCA and Columbia House

Serious discussion about the band known as QUEEN.

Queen-releases on RCA and Columbia House

Postby Walter B. » Sat Feb 25, 2017 4:03 pm

As English is not my mother tongue I hope the following makes sense...

Most Queen albums in the USA have been re-released with RCA and Columbia House tags.

What strikes me is that for the vinyl albums I cannot find:

- on RCA: Queen I, A Night at The Opera and A Day at The Races
- on Columbia House: Queen I, Queen II and Sheer Heart Attack

As for cassettes I cannot find:

- on RCA: Queen I, A Night at The Opera and A Day at The Races
- on Columbia House: Queen I, Queen II and Sheer Heart Attack

And for 8-track cartridges there seem to be no releases for:

- on RCA: Queen I, A Night at The Opera and A Day at The Races
- on Columbia House: Queen I, Queen II, Hot Space and The Works

I find this odd as - especially A Night at The Opera - is one of their most succesful albums.

Any ideas or help? Does any of you have one of the above titles on RCA or Columbia House?

On a different note: I have just found out that there is a Canadian version of Live Killers (vinyl) on Elektra with black/red labels (see https://www.discogs.com/Queen-Live-Killers/release/3420216). I thought that only US-albums up to and uncluding A Night at The Opera had this label variation.

Thanks for any help.

As far as I'm aware, the RCA/Columbia pressings of Queen albums were to do with a mail order record club, or series of them, VERY popular in the seventies and eighties in both the US and UK. In the case of the US the records were licence pressed with the permission of Elektra, and despite saying they were pressed by these companies, they still had Elektra labels on the records.

As regards what albums were pressed, by ANY artist, it would be down to what albums the record clubs negotiated with the original labels.

In the UK, we had a company called Britania, and they generally used the pressings you'd get in the shops. In the US, it was a much bigger market, so they made their own.

As regards generic Elektra labels, A Day At The Races was also pressed with traditional Elektra labels.

If you look at Greek EMI pressings, and various other EMI territories, where they pressed their own copies, they kept generic labels on Queen albums virtually all the way through the band's releases.

Thank you Kes. I wasn't aware of a A Day at The Races with generic Elektra labels. Do you know where to find a picture of it (the label that is)? I have never seen one pop up on eBay or Discogs.

There are a couple of Greek EMI pressings on eBay right now. There is a plethora of label variations worldwide, so the search never stops!

Interesting. Was The Works released on 8-track in the USA? Further: are there, apart from The Miracle, RCA/Columbia House pressings of the Capitol Records cd's The Works and A Kind of Magic?

Yes, there is an 8-track for The Works (USA RCA-version). There is also a Canadian one (on Capitol).

As far as I know there are no RCA or Columbia House cd-pressings for The Works or A Kind of Magic.

Thanks, great info. Never knew those existed. I know that they were made till 1988 or so, but more or less assumed that Hot Space was the last Queen 8-track. Is The Works the final one, or is there an 8-track for A Kind of Magic as well?

On this webpage for record club only 8-tracks from the eighties neither is mentioned:

http://web.archive.org/web/201304201439 ... 80s-2.html

I have never seen RCA/Columbia House cd pressings for The Works and A Kind of Magic either. Could we rule those out or is there a possibility those pressings should exist as well?

There is no 8-Track for A Kind of Magic.

Here's a picture of the Canadian version of The Works:

Thanks, great picture! Is there a picture of the US version too?

Any idea how many of these (both US and CA) were made?

A Day At The Races with generic Elektra labels

Image

In fact, being fair, I've come across about two dozen American copies of Races over the years, and never found ANY with the sleeve design on the labels, as per the EMI ones.

Image

The first American album I saw with a "custom" label (ie featuring a Queen design) was News Of The World.

A couple of others with what I'd call non-standard labels...

Here is a picture of The Game on Elektra with black/red labels. It is used for a Canadian CRIA gold award.

Not sure if the award is genuine, but apparently there are copies of The Game with black/red labels.

Looking at the cutting pattern on the disc, I'd go out on a limb and say it probably is a real copy of The Game that's been lacquered.

A lot of these awards you see, they've just used any old record that's been laying about, lacquer it, and stick photocopied labels (or worse still, CDs!) over the label area.
