A Day At The Races - A Self Made Masterpiece

Serious discussion about the band known as QUEEN.

It's a bit difficult to say.

You see the place today, and it's very hard to correlate that picture to what you see now, from the ground, from the studio balcony, from anywhere, really. That's why I'm still getting my head round it.

The balcony now runs about halfway round the whole corner. From what I was told by Justin Smith, there was a staircase, that went virtually from the control room door, up to the studio. That being the case, it's not that obviously visible on the Jazz photo. Also, from what I gather, that bit of the casino was in use at the time, and they just used to shift the tables out of the way when required. Further to that, I think that bit of floor was also used for the Montreux Music Festival back in the eighties, though on seeing the top floor last year at the Freddie thing, that has enough floor space that it could have been used for that. I was surprised, because from the front of the casino, I'd never guessed there was an area on the top floor that big.

Aha, so the Montreux performances from 1984 and 1986 were in that building too..

Special building that...

I also thought it seemed so strange with the door up there..

I think even Deep Purple recorded Smoke On The Water in that studio? The song was about Frank Zappa playing live nearby and the concert house was burning down because of some stupid with a flare gun.

A lot of history in the walls of that building.

Quote from Brian May website:

**Fri 06 Dec 13**
THE CONCERT HALL IN THE CASINO

It used to look like this, with all our gear set up to record.

This week it looked like this..

Well, I guess it always was a Casino ! But now it's big time gambling. And in small corner … the remains of a music studio, and lots of …. Memorabilia (mostly mine !)

cheers Bri

Another photo: Same carpet and same roof as in the Jazz sleeve.

From the Montreux Jazz Festival 1982:

So her we see evidence that it was used as a casino and also concerts back then. Still the same carpet as when Queen had their gear there..

If they had a piece of that carpet today, they could have sold it to fans on eBay. I bet a Queen fan would be proud to have that in hers/his collection. Imagine saying: I have a piece of that carpet from the inner sleeve of the Jazz album! Maybe crazy, but still a unique piece of memorabilia. 8)

No, Smoke On The Water is ALL about how the previous casino burned down.

Deep Purple were due to record an album in the casino complex, back then it didn't have its own studio, so they hired the Rolling Stones Mobile. The night before they were due to take over the casino, there was a gig by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. During the concert, someone in the crowd fired a flare gun. The flare got caught up in the ceiling, and caused a huge fire that burned down the whole casino. The recording truck nearly went with it, as no-one knew who had the keys. In the end they smashed a window, got into the truck and pushed it clear by hand.

Deep Purple went on to use a "crossroads" of corridors in the Grand Hotel, Montreux, to record their album, with "the Rolling Truck Stones Thing just outside". Smoke On The Water being a track written "on the hoof" while they were recording the album.

When the casino got rebuilt, it was decided to build a recording studio on the side of it, so being able to be used as a designated studio, and with the facility of patching through sound from events at the casino complex, and recording them too.

Making any sense?

Queen then bought this studio a few years later, after recording bits of Jazz there.

Thanks for clearing that up. Yes, they ended up at The Grand Hotel... as in the song :).

So in a way, if it wasn't for that person with the flare gun, that studio would not have been built, and that Jazz sleeve would not have existed... and maybe not Hot Space, Flash, Innuendo or Made In Heaven as we know them..

Crazy really, just to think about it.. That person on the Zappa concert had a huge influence, indirectly on the Queen history, without knowing it.. Haha.. that is so weird.

And not at least to be the one called "some stupid with a flare gun" burned the place to the ground.. wonder what he was thinking when he heard that song.. did he say to the person next to him? : Hey, that is me they are singing about... probably not. I suppose he was ashamed of it.. I don't know.

And he was responsible for Deep Purple making their biggest hit ever.. and probably why many generations of people learned to play guitar...

That is a whole lot of things influenced by a man that was only going to see Zappa on a concert.. and happened to be so stupid to use a flare gun. Incredible really.. The more I think about it, the more crazy it gets..

And for sure, this collaboration would never have seen the light of day either:

It makes me thinking.. how little we know, and how things people do affect other things in the future.. without knowing how .. slightly off topic there..

Thanks Kes for posting the link to Philsbook studio site. I must admit I had forgotten about it and it was good to revisit and look through the info.

Re the Montreux Jazz festival, if you look at the footage of Queen playing there in 86 the ceiling lighting panels as seen in the Jazz gatefold a clearly visible during the show.

Now that was an eye-opener to me. I never realized that Queen really were on home ground at the Montreux Festival. It was a concert in the room were they recorded the Jazz album. And right above them the studio, which Queen owned, and where they also recorded the A Kind Of Magic album. The audience watched them in the studio in a way.. crazy. The audience were the strangers, not Queen, no they were only in their good old studio. Haha.. Thank God we had that picture in the Jazz sleeve. Cool stuff.

The Montreux Jazz Festival is worldwide known and has had the most legendary artists there.
The Montreux Pop Festival was this one. Both festivals were in that building/room.

I always thought this was a very odd occasion for them, performing in Switzerland, playback and everything, but they were in their own studio.. haha. Wow, we learn something every day.

Then you had the legendary studios located in the basement of the Arabella centre in Munich, where Queen (and ELO) recorded classic after classic.

Strange, there's a chuffing great Sheraton hotel above it, but Fred still stayed at the Hilton.

Thinking about it, I know a few stories about his visits to the Munich Hilton. One involved Henry Kissinger, and his security team being bounced by Queen's roadies armed with water pistols. You think, you had pissed up hairy roadies opening lift doors on Kissinger's floor and taking on live armed special protection guys. Crazy or what?

Crazy indeed

I remember Brian called the building a grim place during the Hot Space sessions, they later found out that people had been jumping down from that particular building, taking their lives..

That is from the Musicland Studios 1984.. down in the basement of the hotel.

ELO and Mack in the Musicland Studios

Two Deep Purple albums, Xanadu (Olivia Newton John + ELO) on the wall there in the studio in Munich. And if you look closely, you can also see a part of The Works cover.

:

Yes I think much of Jim Beaches operation was run from montreux and possibly the studio/casino complex. I remember in the mid 90's I recieved a business correspondence from Jim Beach (relating to Brian May) from Montreux. The letter heading was Montreux Festival Production (or similar) not Queen productions.

I guess Queens former ownership of the studio and Jim Beach's position in a company which was related to the building might explain their involvement in the Jazz Festival?

Queen wasn't the be all and end all of Jim Beach's management tasks. For a long time, he was also looking after Monty Python's business affairs.

Indeed - Jim was the man responsible for the Python reunion shows at the O2 a few years back....he moved them along from the idea of a one off show to pay some tax bills to a string of lucrative dates. Jim and Eric idle were (from recall) at University together and remained friends.
