Anthology-less Box Sets....

Serious discussion about the band known as QUEEN.

Anthology-less Box Sets....

Postby soxtalon » Tue Aug 01, 2017 5:56 pm

As more and more time comes and goes and more and more are released in drips and drabs....and as it's been said that an Anthology type product hasn't been mentioned in awhile, perhaps Anniversary Expanded Edition releases will be the closest we can get to that type of product. Unfortunately for completists I can't see every album getting an expanded anniversary edition...Somehow the Hot Space Anniversary will probably come and go unmentioned, lol.

SO with that in mind - what albums out there have enough credibility for such a release?

Going through:

Queen - Doubtful
Queen II - Doubtful - though it's status as fan favorite give it an outside shot.
Sheer Heart Attack - I think it's too underrated to get one...but it's a tick above Queen II
A Night At The Opera - Sounds reasonable to get one...
A Day At The Races - I'd put it with Sheer Heart Attack
News of the World - DONE
Jazz - Doubtful
The Game - I think this would have a good shot - well performing singles in America. This could be one
Flash Gordon Soundtrack - No...ALTHOUGH maybe as part of a grand re-release of the film...but still doutbful
Hot Space - No
The Works - ? Maybe ?
A Kind of Magic - I think has a good shot with the volume of possibilities. I could be wrong
The Miracle - Doesn't seem like it
Innuendo - Again a strong possibility - Freddie's last album with the band
Made In Heaven - The epilogue Album? An outside shot

So my reckoning would be ANATO, The Game, Innuendo would be Definites
AKOM, MIH, SHA ADATR - Possibles
QII, Jazz, The Miracle - Doubtful
Q - Even more Doubtful
Flash, Hot Space - NO chance in hell (or EXTREMELY slight in Flash's case)

If you had asked the same question a few months ago, I think most people probably would have thought NotW was quite far down the list of most likely albums to get an expanded edition...so I don't know.

A Night at the Opera is the most obvious choice for me and yet I don't reallly see it happening.

I would really like an Innuendo Box set. With demos, outtakes, rarities, etc.

:)

I would have said it was definitely a possibility...Perhaps it's a UK/American thing? NOTW was always one of the top albums in America for the band.

If I had started this topic a few months ago, I would have placed this as a Definite...

If I had to choose one among the more likely than this would be my choice too.

I'd really love Queen II but that seems highly unlikely

I think Innuendo might be difficult to fill, what with

a) limited Freddie
b) no concert

On the overall question - NATO has had it's chance, and we got the DVD-A + Classic albums. Plus, the Bo Rhap master tape leak gives alternate versions of that.

My opinion is that it will be NOTW, possibly The Game, but more likely a two/three edition Anthology - one live, up to 2 studio(maybe 70s / 80s). I'm sure there's enough material for more, but I just can't, at this stage, envisage BM/RT being willing to (in their view) lower the "releasable quality" bar low enough.

Not true. While there may not be any more fully realized demos, I'm betting there's a ton of unused ideas and at the very least, alternate takes or early versions of album tracks.

Especially if combined with concert audio from that timeframe - these could be good releases

Not at all - they were scraping the barrel with those, and it was a cheek calling them 'deluxe' editions; for every gem like the working versions or early versions of Football Fight, Sail Away Sweet Sister and Dreamer's Ball, there were two or three piss-takes like Live at Wembley, Montreal and MK tracks, and newly created faux instrumentals with no purpose. 'Deluxe' they were not.
