Queen Songs Improved with Alternate Edits/Mixes

Serious discussion about the band known as QUEEN.

Queen Songs Improved with Alternate Edits/Mixes

Postby Leigh Burne » Mon Aug 21, 2017 11:50 am

Was listening to the single version of "Hammer to Fall" yesterday and it really struck me just how much better the middle section is in the shorter version of the song. It has a bunch of additional May harmonies thrown into the solo and that fantastic vocal from Freddie on "baby now your struggle's all in vain" - that bit in particular never sounds quite right on the longer mixes of the track once you've heard how it goes on the single edit.

"I Want to Break Free" was another one that seemed significantly improved when they reworked it a bit for the single. The album version is really limp in comparison.

Anyone else think of any other alternate edits/mixes the band did that really elevated a particular song for you?

I really like the Classic Queen version of Under Pressure more than the original version on HS :tomato:

I Want It All on Queen Rocks is the best bits of the single and album versions in one song.

I always liked the extended version of it's a Hard Life with the false ending and the two guitar solos.

Good call! That one had honestly slipped my mind but you're right.

Fat Bottomed Girls single edit is an improvement on the Jazz version IMO.

I don't know if this technically should count, but the album version of The Miracle is way better than the edit on Classic Queen, which takes the fast part out.

I'm pretty sure that edit was only on that compilation, so it's really more of a song made worse than a song improved, I guess. But it counts to me, though, because I only heard the album version long after the other one.

Also, speaking of Queen Rocks, there's the "retake" of I Can't Live With You!

Would it save you a lot of time if I just gave up and went mad now?

And that is an absolute gem.
Far too weak on Innuendo but a cracking version on 'Rocks'

I've always thought this too! It punches right in. whereas the album version kind of meanders at first. I don't like the fadeout of the single, though. The album version's ending is one of their most slammin' and crunchiest.

I've always felt that the Brian Malouf mix of I Can't Live With You as the definitive version. Everything sounds heavier and crisper. The rocks version just sounds like a jumble sale mix.

Not an official one, but if you cut out the dodgy mashup at the end of More Of That Jazz you've got one of the best songs in the band's catalogue...

PiotreQ has made some great Queen remixes, he as a YouTube page full of them, but none better than Bohemian Rhapsody (Orchestral 2011 Mix ) the video is pretty good too.

I like the album version. It's shorter. I find IWTBF a song that seriously outstays it's welcome.

Tempted to agree that if you cut out that end bit, which only helps to "date" the song, you wind up with a much better track.

These don't exist but I've always though they should.

The Invisible Man would be much better with the incessant hi hat either removed or much lower in the mix.

Was It All Worth It would be much better with the synth replaced by guitar.

IMO
