Rain Must Fall

Serious discussion about the band known as QUEEN.

Rain Must Fall

Postby Simon » Fri Dec 29, 2017 10:20 am

Listened to The Miracle after months. Sounded fresh and nice. I had fun. Particularly when "Rain Must Fall" came on. Almost forgot about this one. Anyway, I've been wondering about this for years: Is this Freddie secretly singing about himself?
I forgot the details about The Miracle album, and I don't remember who wrote what. And I do not think it's likely that Freddie would describe himself as naive and describe his health issues as "meh... rain must fall", but it IS a little odd hearing his voice sing these lines in 1989.
Or does anybody know if this is a song about someone in particular? Or just celebrities in general?
"Or you have it, or you don't!"

I think Rain Must Fall was co written between Fred & John.

I only vaguely remember this....but I thought I read once that Brian was asked about the song sounding like a song by some other artist, and he said something to the effect of "ask John, it's his song"

Yeah, I read something similar some years ago: stating it was written solely by John. And it definitely has that soul/dance/Motowny type of feel to it - which really was Deaky's bag.

:tomato: I love Rain Must Fall. I always have, and always will. Actually it's one of my favorite Queen songs.

Bingo! I have always said that, for me, 'The Miracle' is quite a fun and uptempo album; and thus, has remained in my Top 5 from them, for a very long time.

Yeah, I second that. After some lacklustre albums in the mid 80s, The Miracle just seemed to brim with life and joy and a little madness; they sounded rejuvenated and more alive (ironic, considering Freddie's situation) then they had done in years.

I'm going to agree with you guys on this. It's a powerful album all things considered. It suits every human emotion from love, anger, longing, passion...it's all there. I think many of the lyrics hold up today, even if the production is dated. But that's fine by me, l sure love Queen and 80s music.
ETA...meant to quote all the above posts, but only managed one.

Fuck knows what is happening with these quotes, Icy! Bloody stupid things :P

To me, The Miracle was the beginning of their rebirth, if you like: they had pulled together again as a band of brothers - and you can tell that just from listening to the tracks (rather than the period in the 80s when they could hardly record in the studio at the same time anymore)...this album saw them performing as a proper band again. And then of course we got Innuendo - which really could have sat between SHA and ANATO, it was that powerful and eclectic...

...makes one wonder how many more classic albums they could have produced had Freddie not died when he did; but then, saying that, we would not have had The Miracle and Innuendo had he not been ill anyway. Whatever, what a fitting ending to their years together.

The Miracle is great album, that is after the first 2 tracks, IMO Party & Khashoggi's Ship are not good enough to be on any Queen album, especially when you consider the songs that could have been on there in their place.

Cheers, guys and gals... I also had a feeling that it's John's penmanship.
I ALSO had a feeling that this one will turn out to be a thread about whether or not The Miracle is a good album or not :P.
So, no one really knows if "Rain Must Fall" was inspired by somebody or something in particular?

And finally: I actually do like the two opening tracks of this album. For this album, they work. They don't necessarily work as stand-alone works... but neither does "Procession"

I particularly like Brian's guitar work on RMF - very uplifting and joyous!

And I agree: I enjoy the opening two tracks - I think Party kicked the album off good and proper. Not the best in the catalogue, but far from the worst.
