Queen's Weakest Lyrics - Your Picks?

Serious discussion about the band known as QUEEN.

Queen's Weakest Lyrics - Your Picks?

So, one of the things I've not seen heavily criticized in Queen is their lyrics. Honestly, I always assumed most fans considered them great or at the very least solid.

But, I do wonder - what songs or segments of songs do you think represent weak points for the group's lyrical catalog? Which have made you cringe? Do they ruin potentially great songs?

I've always cringed at Fun It. Even the title alone is horrid.

"Don't shun it. Fun it."

Lol

Maybe "Fun It" is a British expression I'm not aware of? It just sounds silly to me. Still, it's a harmless song.

Also, I don't really consider Queen to be great lyricists. They had their share of brilliant moments (The Show Must Go On comes to mind) but overall I'd say their strength was in their melodies and harmonies. And that's what I appreciate the most.

Sweet Lady - "You call me sweet. Like I'm some kind of cheese!"

Life Is Real - "Breastfeeding myself, what more can I say?"

As regards Fun It, in 1978, there were a few worse songs knocking around, some of them even getting to the top of the charts! Some people bang on about Another One Bites The Dust, and how diverse it was coming from a rock band. Well, they did this little jaunt into disco funk, something like about 18 months before AOBTD, and IMHO it beats most of their later attempts that surfaced on Hot Space.

Even though the two instances I quoted were from Brian and Freddie, it's usually Roger who comes up with the lyrics where you think "Hmmm, that could have done with another couple of minutes looking in the rhyming dictionary".

I'll probably go to hell for this but I never liked the lyrics to The Miracle. However, and I'm on both shaky and solid ground here, most of the lyrics on TCR were woeful. As this records status as a Queen album is still an open question I'll demur but "We believe" is truly hateful.

When you consider who wrote it, and the stuff he writes on his soapbox, then it probably IS written from the heart, it's just that following songs like We Are The World, and You're The Voice, it just comes across as cheesier than a double pack of Cathedral City Cheddar.

I agree with everyone's choices for bad lyrics with the exception of The Miracle. I think it's beautiful. Not great, but in light of what Freddie was facing I think it's an inspired song.

I've never really been bothered all that much by lyrics, so something has to be really awful for me to notice it as bad.

The only one that springs to mind is the cheese line. But given the "Fried chicken!" in "One Vision", maybe they were just taking the piss with that. Even so, it always kinda stood out as a bit wtf.

...but when you think about it, it kind of makes sense. Lover turns to hater, on this escalator ... well an escalator doesn't stop, does it? So what the band is trying to say is that you're inevitably bound to hate your lover in a relationship. There's no stopping it. The only way to stop it from happening is jumping off of the escalator, but of course the higher you get (assuming you're going up) the deadlier the fall. Of course, the band could have just been up all night recording and were tired of trying to think of better rhymes. :P

From Heaven for Everyone:

Their basic pride and dignity
Is stripped and torn and shown no pity

That “pity” is horribly shoehorned - why not something like “Is stripped and torn, destroyed with glee”? It’s not difficult ;-)

Glee sounds worse, IMHO. I've actually never had a problem with the lyrics for Heaven For Everyone. I love the overall feeling and message of it. And with that particular line you mentioned, I love the way it was sung. Yeah, it's kind of long winded, but Freddie knew how to phrase it. You could feel the pain in his voice. Great moment for me, anyway.

Pretty much all of Now I'm Here.

Why are we talking about bad lyrics? Why can't we talk about good lyrics instead? They've had some amazing poetry over the years. Mother Love, Innuendo and Lily of the Valley come to mind.

As much as I like Staying Power for it's sheer abrasive camp (and the horns), something really irks me about the line "Let's just trash, trash, trash!" .

I don't know what it is about the line, but it makes me cringe all the same.
