Disappointing Media Piece about the band

Serious discussion about the band known as QUEEN.

Disappointing Media Piece about the band

Postby Dear Friends » Wed May 09, 2018 11:50 pm

Thought I'd post one of the worst things I've seen written about the band in a long time:

I'm going to copy paste because don't support this by clicking on it, it's here: http://www.vulture.com/2018/05/rock-and ... worst.html

213. Queen — John Deacon, Brian May, Freddie Mercury, and Roger Taylor (2001)
When popularity is factored in, Queen is the most overrated band in the history of pop music. This preposterous aggregation looked and sounded awful from the beginning, their music a pastiche of pastiches of things no one in the band were inclined to understand, all of it culminating in “We Will Rock You.” Queen haters love to say the song is appropriate for a Nuremburg rally, but you can also sort of see Leni Riefenstahl giving it a listen, cocking her head and saying, “Nein. A little too much.” Their popularity in the U.S. went down quickly after their heyday, but they remained unaccountable super-duper-stars in the U.K. and in time became the rock equivalent to the beloved ugly toy you had when you grew up. Docked 30 notches because of this: After the band’s closeted lead singer, Freddie Mercury, died of AIDS, the entire rock universe held a televised tribute show, broadcast on MTV, during which mentions of homosexuality and AIDS were kept closely under wraps. The band (and everyone else at the show) let a new generation of vulnerable kids — and thousands of the unloved, dying alone on the streets — know that, yes, they should be ashamed of who they are. Thirty years earlier, the Lovin’ Spoonful, in one of the best songs about rock and roll, captured it this way: “Believe in the magic that can set you free.” By that wholly credible standard, Queen aren’t rock and roll at all and don’t belong in the hall of fame.

This to me is totally unfair representation of the band's support of AIDs charities over the years. It's not on, this is 2018, not the tabloids in 1991.

To me this underlines that there will be a cohort of media who will drive huge opposition to the movie by the way.

Things haven't quite been the same for Bill Wyman since he left the Stones, have they?

Seriously, this guy has his head SO far up his own arse, he can almost see daylight at the other end.

That may be the best ever use of a spoiler box.

Any way, it's good to be reminded of that time, circa 1970 - 1991, when everyone who wasn't a Queen fan absolutely despised Queen, like cancer. My personal favourite was, I believe, the NME obituary, which began something like "Freddie Mercury probably voted Conservative and therefore deserved to die because they don't fund AIDS research". Ah, those were the days.

Fuck the NME. No wonder the acid fingered idiots went bust.

I despise articles like the one the OP posted. Aleays smack of some young, studenty type trying to be 'edgy' and cool.

What is it about the acronymed sexuality lobby that they incessantly claim Freddie was in the closet just because he wasn't a spokesperson for their "cause" ? There was always this weird, doublethink criticism of Freddie, Queen and their largely hetero blue collar fans that because none of us gave a shit about his sexuality and just loved the music that we are some kind of symbol of anti gay villainy. They hate him because he never played the victim.

Luckily for me, I never thought it was.

Just thought it a fun idea to put the possibility out there, and see if anyone would run with it.

Exactly, his relaxed yet enthusiastic way of flaunting his sexuality is something mostly (aside from his promiscuity) positive. He didn't have to play the victim card or apply a label to himself, he just did what and who he did.

I can also admire him for his defiant attitude towards his illness, going out with his sense of humour and trademark defiance in tact.

Our Freddie sure had guts. Puts the writer of this article to shame.
This writer... I've read some other pieces he wrote, is there something that he liked? Dude has more than sour grapes.

The funny thing about Queen is the range between praise and hate of the band. Neither Beatles or Led Zeppelin have the same range. The same can probably be said about the range in music, and maybe there is the answer?

The music press don't have a box to put them in, though they desperately tried.
