ALBUM SIDES: "QUEEN II" (1974)

Serious discussion about the band known as QUEEN.

IIRC. 'Funny How Love Is' was produced by Robin Cable, the same bloke who produced the Larry Lurex single, so THAT might possibly explain why it sounds the way it does. I think Robin also gets a credit for co-producing Black Queen, but that might be just because it segues into FHLI.

Thanks.

That explains a lot.

This is a tough one for sure. I like every song on Side White, even The Loser in the End, but the songs I like on Side Black I like in a stronger way. If Side Black didn't have the blemish that is Funny How Love Is, it would be a complete masterpiece. That's what makes Queen so interesting though. They always have "near perfect" albums. Not one of their albums has a complete collection of songs that I like. There's always one or two that is just "eh" for me.

I feel Funny How Love Is kills the flow on the 'Black Side'. I never ever listen to that. I would have started off 'Black Side' with Seven Seas of Rhye and ended with March of the Black Queen.

The Loser in the End is dreadful - it sounds like Rod Stewart having an angry fight with a fucked 1903 steam engine.

I like Funny How Love Is; you can hear a shift towards the more commercial sound realised on SHA. It’s far from perfect but it’s evolutionary.

Not Some Day One Day? I'll never get the lack of appeal for this beautiful, warm, yet subtly shaded tune with a perfectly melancholy vocal from Brian (his voice always had a plaintive tone). I think it fits perfectly on the album.

I have posted elsewhere about how I have recently compiled a ranking of Queen songs from least favourite to favourite and how I used the ranking to try and work out mathematically my favourite album. Anyway, by one measure, Queen II came out as my favourite. This is what I said (slightly amended) with regard to Queen II:

The big surprise was Queen II coming out top (I always think of it as my third favourite album after Sheer Heart Attack and A Night At The Opera). When I look at how I scored the tracks, I find that it is an album very much of two halves (and I don’t mean the two sides, Black and White): six absolutely fantastic songs and five merely ‘good’ songs. It’s the very opposite of the consistency of A Day At The Races but the good tracks are so good (five in the top twenty) that it ends up winning.

This is how I scored Queen II:

02 – White Queen (As It Began)
12 – Seven Seas Of Rhye
14 – The Fairy Feller’s Master-Stroke
16 – Father To Son
18 – Nevermore
23 – The March Of The Black Queen
88 – Ogre Battle
112 – Some Day One Day
115 – Procession
145 – Funny How Love Is
152 – The Loser In The End (sorry, Rog)

I have been listening the album for years now never liked it but it would be boring if everybody liked the same thing his vocals don't appeal to me on this track

The only track where I don't like his vocals at all is She Makes Me - interesting conceptually but it's the most boring thing they did and Bri sounds like he has a nasty cold. I can't imagine Freddie doing a better a job on SDOD.
