They're quite frightening, disturbing really  but very well drawn.

Well, I have to admit the artwork on these is really fantastic. However, if I were going to be totally honest, I'd have to say I just don't like seeing Freddie portrayed in this way (am I crazy? am I alone in this?). I have to say, one or two were so hideous & grotesque, I had to look away! Seriously! I mean some of them really are repugnant to me. I can appreciate the great artwork and imagination of the pieces, but......

Call me crazy, I guess. Not exactly what I want hanging on my bedroom wall!

Personally, I don't think you're crazy and alone in thinking this. I don't know about you, but I'm not objective enough to fully appreciate these caricatures... :P which are technically wonderful, IMO, but I had your same feeling when I saw them. I don't know, the result is just... Weird.

This one, for example. I think the technique is simply stunning, but maybe what is weird is the fact that with such a realistic technique I'd expect a realistic drawing too. But in this way, it makes Freddie look a bit like a monster.
Maybe it's just me, maybe I'm not able to understand caricatures, and this should be strange, since I once said that I'd like to do them... But maybe it's not my thing after all. But one thing is certain, and I agree with you all: they are wonderfully drawn. :) As for the rest... It's a matter of taste, I suppose.

Oh, and I already said that I really like the first one. That one doesn't disturb me at all, I think it's very nice. :)

Yes, not everyone like caricature..I personally find it refreshing though, because straight portraits can become boring. A caricature is a different kind of challenge, finding a likeness through making the more dominant features the most prominent.

Wow, Nick! A most fascinating article!! The whole time I'm reading the descriptions of the caricatures the artists were drawing, I wanted so much to see their work! I had no idea how important caricatures just might be and that there was so much research and study going on. Fascinating, indeed! I don't think I have the eye for that type of art at all, but it might be fun to try and fool around with it a little. One thing is certain, I wouldn't want a caricature done of myself!! OMG, I can only imagine. I felt a little sorry for Ben at the end when he reacted as he did to his caricature. I also found it fascinating to read how caricature artists observe so quickly the prominent features & then just as quickly draw it out. Just reading the descriptions they were giving of their subjects was amazing. They noticed everything! They definitely have great powers of observation. I think they notice things a lot of us don't notice or at least not at a glance the way they do. I suppose it may be something one can learn, although it does seem like it is natural to some people. Perhaps I'll look at people more closely now and see if I can notice certain things about them and try and draw it out. Could be fun, really. I'll start with my husband! LOL. Thanks, Nick, it was really quite a read. :-D

@ nicksmithworld: It's not that I don't like caricatures at all. I like some kinds of caricatures, especially those where you can tell that it's obviously a caricature. When I look at the 'realistic' ones you posted, they make me think that they are original pics, or realistic drawings, which have been somehow altered, and it produces a kind of weirdness.
But again, maybe it's just my weird feeling. I'm quite ignorant, so most of the time I can just rely on my feelings. :P
I respect so much this work and people who are able to do things like these, though, because I understand that looking at people and being able to catch their features in this way is a great talent. :)

Caricature is facinating. In our computer age you can be a caricaturist without even needing to draw, here's one I've just done to prove this point.

Image

and for comparison, the original..

Image

what I found odd whilst doing this was as I exagerated it more and more, the original seemed less and less familiar..my ability to recognised Freddie's face was altering..

stare at the caricature for 2 mins then scroll down to the original image and you will see what I mean..your whole perception gets altered..

So fascinating. I stared for 2 minutes like you said. Wow, so true! It is all so very interesting, really. Thanks for giving me a glimpse into the world of caricatures. Most enthralling! I can understand it's appeal a little bit better.

Cheers!

P.S. I still would rather not see Freddie looking like that, though! LOL. :-D

Wow! Amazing. I found it interesting what you did with Brian's hand.

Have you ever done a portrait or caricature of yourself?

Thanks, Nick! :-D
