Songs That You Prefer Live

Talk about Queen's live performances.

Songs That You Prefer Live

Postby mab » Thu Jul 21, 2011 10:41 am

Which Queen tracks do you prefer live?

Mine would be:

Keep Yourself Alive (particularly Hammersmith 75 - great intro)
In The Lap Of The Gods (no silly vocal effects)
'39 (love the record but think it really comes to life in concert)
Love Of My Life (as above)
You Take My Breath Away (no emotion, to me, in the studio version - it's too polished and lush)
Somebody To Love (love the record but think it really comes to life in concert)
We Are The Champions (as above)
We Will Rock You (as above)
Let Me Entertain You (dreadful 'sound' on the record - Montreal sounds amazing)
Another One Bites The Dust (really comes to life in concert)
Action This Day (album version very forgettable, live it's quite enjoyable)
Calling All Girls (the live version really brings it to life)
Radio Ga Ga (Magic Tour only - didn't sound too good in 84/85 - love the Wembley '86 version)

I WOULD also add White Queen with the great piano/guitar solo in the middle BUT Freddie's clunking piano (on Rainbow and Hammersmith at least) when he sings the 'I call her name/and when she came' lines is bloody awful.

White Queen - always much superior live, to my ears.
Staying Power - as well as Action This Day and Calling All Girls, of course.

And I wouldn´t say it´s better, but I enjoy the Flash live version from Montreal as much as the studio one.
I guess playing and acceptable live rendition of that song wasn´t an easy task, but they did it.
Bring out the charge of the love brigade ...

Lovely list but we are discussing the songs that you PREFER live AHEAD OF the album versions, not just live performances that you think are good.

'Backchat' - Live at the Bowl (although Freddie's American pronunciation of "Jahn" before the song is a little cringey.
'Is This The World We Created'- Live at Wembley/Live in Japan
'In The Lap Of The Gods' - Live at Wembley
'The Millionaire Waltz' - Live in Houston

Sorry, I'm French and I'm not super good at English... ^^
So yes YTMBA is better live than album version. The Prophet's song too.

I'd agree that Hammer To Fall is another one that is distinctly better live. Much more energy and 'feel'.

I think that The Works is like Hot Space in the sense that many of the tracks sound far better live than they do on the actual record. Except I Want To Break Free, which sounded bloody awful live on the whole, thanks to Fred's shouty performance of it.

I think they were all better live. Staying Power is the obvious one for me. It turned into a rock song.

Hammer To Fall is a good one.

Another One Bites the Dust on the Magic Tour was great.

As much as I can understand people preferring the live takes from Hot Space tracks, I do believe that the inital idea of those tracks are best represented on the record. Therefore, I don't really prefer those live renditions. They are, in essence, mostly dance tracks, and that doesn't come across in their live performances that well. Rocky tunes, on the other hand, like "Now I'm Here" or "Hammer to Fall" vastly gain in a live atmosphere: faster, louder, harder, more edge.

The production on those records is quite poor - they just don't sound great whether dance tracks or not.

Disagree about Now I'm Here - the studio cut is better in my view.

I've never been a fan of Now I'm Here in general. The live versions do seem to go on a bit.

Not a great fan of this song in general. But I prefer the faster approach (and Roger's tortured look during drumming).

And I didn't know you meant comparing production quality of the songs live and on the records.
