Why was the Magic Tour so short ?

Talk about Queen's live performances.

Why was the Magic Tour so short ?

Postby DREAMASTER » Wed Jun 26, 2013 8:37 pm

This always puzzled me. Queen always made big world tours for each album. So why the tour for the AKOM album was only made in Europe and not the rest of the world as usual?

one reason was Freddie refused to tour the U.S. until Queen had a hit album over there & unfortunately for Queen touring the U.S. was the only way they were gonna sell big after the flop of Hot Space.

Didn't Freddie also refuse to make excessive tours? I mean, his voice did not really profit from extensive touring the years before.

26 Stadium and festival sized shows, isn't THAT small.

I've been through a list of the tour attendance figures and think it comes to "about" 960,000.

That's not bad, is it?

The question was "why so short" not "why so small".

They probably felt they were playing to the capacity.

After all, Knebworth was an add on, and prior to them actually getting into the tour, they were seriously worried about filling that one.

Yet everyone of the 26 shows was %100 sell out. I think the short tour leg was to feel the fans out, and by the time it was over and they knew how they were being received, something else was afoot.

Granted there was a bit of a boycott of the U.S. but Canada, Japan and South America were huge Queen fans.

So I attribute it to Freddie's diminishing stamina, which he would never allow to be publicly noticable. I believe if he felt he couldn't exceed himself he didn't want to be out there on stage.

The first time I saw that wistful look on Freddies face looking back over his shoulder as he left the Wembley stage has haunted me ever since.

I think he already had 1987 mapped out working with Big Bird. And as you say, it was while he was doing that he allegedly found out that the old egg timer was running out of sand.

Add to that, certain members of the band seemed to think the Magic Tour was three or four more gigs than they'd agreed to, and it showed. It's not everyday you throw about £800 worth of bass into an even dearer speaker cab, is it?

So it is your theory that John was angry because he could have made a couple more bucks if other people hadn't intervened?

No, I think he means that John was upset to add more shows.

From AKOM on, John was losing interest in Queen at an alarming rate.

Take any point in time you want. Someone going to Bali ski-ing when the other three are beavering away in the studio. The Mike Read interview when he says "That's even harder work than being in the studio!". Him finding out Freddie was dying.

He wasn't a happy teddy bear! Don't know why, but his being pissed off with it all seems to crop up more with him during this time frame, than any other band member.

Hard for a fan to understand how such a great talent wouldn't love the business; grueling though it must be, particularly for the level of professionalism Queen brought to their stages.
People have their priorities, and his wasn't in music apparently. Least not the way it was.

So there's that then, with John, that probably played a part.

I think he just got cheesed off with being the peacemaker all the time. The other three were quite strong minded, and would discuss things at a bit of an intense level.

Not a bad thing, as a lot of their best work came out of this process, and probably a lot of shit got canned at the same time, but it was probably quite tiring being in the middle of it all.

So, you are saying, while they were playing Knebworth, there was still talk about doing further gigs and John strongly disagreed because he wasn't interested in being in Queen anymore because Freddie was ill?
