Live Killers

Talk about Queen's live performances.

Live Killers

Postby maidenpriest » Sun Nov 19, 2017 9:50 pm

As I have posted on other forums I am trying to determine which songs from 'Live Killers' run too fast, it has been said that 'Keep Yourself Alive' is a full semitone too fast, can anyone else shed some light into what songs run too fast and need to be adjusted to bring back to the correct performed speed ?
Cheers

Dreamer's Ball and Keep Yourself Alive run fast. Also the end section of Brighton Rock, when the vocals come back in.

Dreamer's Ball is in Bb on Live Killers (studio version in A). Similarly KYA is in F# (studio version in F). I think that's a full semitone? KYA has always sounded a bit odd to me on this album.

From my comparisons over the past few days I think the whole album is half a semitone too fast with the songs you mentioned a further 1 semitone to fast therefore 1 & 1/2 too fast  , I have made adjustments and it sounds so much better and 'real sounding' now !!

I've been playing along to LK with a guitar, most of the other tracks seem close enough to the original key. Don't Stop Me Now and Spread Your Wings are a little sharp, possibly by half a semitone.

The more you dig in to LK, the more you realise it isn't really a proper representation of a 1979 Queen concert:

- some songs run at the wrong speed (Dreamers Ball, Keep Yourself Alive)
- some songs are overdubbed (Don't Stop Me Now, Tie Your Mother Down)
- some songs were omitted from the normal tour setlist (Somebody To Love, Fat Bottomed Girls)
- parts of the setlist re-sequenced to fit the running order etc

Which one was that?

The Music Club release, or the Peppermint one?

That's a shame.

The Peppermint ones are starting to become quite collectable.

You can tell those quite easily, because they are just black and yellow on the front cover, no photos.

I think having anything to do with Picture Music International (PMI) would probably make that about the third or fourth issue of it.

Yes so does the original Budapest VHS. I seem to remember it was something to do with these shows being filmed at 24 frames-per-second which led to a faster rate on playback at 25 fps.

It deserves a re-release, maybe one original version and
a box set version, including a complete 1979 concert on Blu-ray and CD.

It's not exactly a LK-era show, but if they wanna release a complete '79 show, there's always the 12/26 Hammersmith concert....which is already one of the best-sounding unofficial recordings.
