Magic Tour 1986 - mysterious Polish dates on Dutch Wikipedia

Postby Przemek1986 » Thu Mar 01, 2018 3:26 pm

Hi everyone.
My name is Przemek, I'm Polish and this is my first post here.

I have a question. I have always been a Queen fan and I have always thought that the only Queen's performance (with Freddie) behind the Iron Curtain was in Budapest. I also heard/read somewhere that they were planning some gigs in Czechoslovakia (but it didn't work out). Only a couple of days ago I checked The Magic Tour on Dutch Wikipedia and I noticed two Polish dates: Warsaw (24 July 1986) and Katowice (25 July 1986). Of course, those concerts never took place but my question is:

Have those shows actually been scheduled and confirmed but cancelled in the course of time or, simply, Dutch Wikipedia lies?

I have read multiple articles on Queen (in Polish) in the course of the last 20 years but, somehow, I never saw anyone mention those two shows which never took place. On the other hand, why would some random Dutchman just like that, without a reason, add two Polish dates to the Magic Tour tour date list. It's strange and I hope that you guys know more. It would be nice to know that Queen were planning to visit my country.

Thank you in advance!

Apparently there were plans for more concerts in Eastern Europe, including Czechoslovakia and USSR but this is the first I've heard of Polish dates.

There's a curious 5 day gap between the Vienna and Frejus concerts that the proposed Polish concerts would have fitted into, longer than any other gap during the Magic tour. So there must have been more dates planned for those days.

it wouldn't be the first time Queen had concerts planned but never happened. There was talk of touring South America in 1983, some tickets and posters were even printed.

Thank you for answering. :)

I haven't heard of the Polish dates either. It came as a big surprise.

Exactly, there is a big gap between those two dates. I wonder if there's any way this could be checked. Maybe there is some preliminary schedule draft with some dates in it which were removed in the process. I wish I could find that Dutchman who wrote the Wikipedia article. He must know the source.

That's actually a good idea. I never thought about it.

I have, indeed, created an account on Wikipedia and asked the author. Let's see what happens.

Or, you could just message Gerry Stickells direct on facebook, and if you're lucky, get the real story straight from the horse's mouth

C'mon people. It's not exactly impossible. Someone on here asked if anyone knew what the orchestra was on Mr. Bad Guy. I messaged Mack and asked him directly. Within 24 hours, he answered me. No duff gen, from someone giving an opinion. The real deal, straight off.

The English wiki page claims some shows were rearranged from the original dates, Budapest & Frejus for example:

That's true. Those shows were rearranged. Unfortunately, we don't know why...Maybe because the Polish shows got cancelled...But I have no idea.

By the way. I just got a reply from the Dutchman who adjusted the Wikipedia article.

He says: De enige actie mijnerzijds was het herstellen van de verwijdering van die twee concerten (zonder uitleg) in het kader van vandalisme bestrijding, twee jaar geleden. Moch dat fout zijn, errare humanum est.

Translation: The only thing I did was, in attempt to prevent vandalism, restoring those two concerts which had previously been removed two years ago (without any explanation). If it's a mistake, errare humanum est (it's a human thing to make mistakes).

UPDATE:
The Polish concerts have been removed from the article on Dutch Wikipedia. Me and the author agreed upon the fact that the concerts never took place and, therefore, should be removed from the list. We still don't know why the Polish concerts were listed, in first place.

I feel a bit disappointed. I was hoping to discover something interesting (e.g. that Queen were preparing a range of gigs in Poland, Czechoslovakia etc.) but, in turn, it seems that it's just somebody's mistake which mislead me and that there's no real way to find out the real truth.

Just be humble, and appreciative.

I'm sure the guy will probably answer anyone asking a serious question, politely.
