I've always thought of it like this:

Paul's career was huge way before he got anywhere near Queen.

I'd never heard of Adam until the band decided to stick him out front.

I think of it like this:

Brian and Roger were asked to perform at an event, and they needed a frontman. They could have asked anyone, including Paul Rogers, those who had done the Freddie Mercury tribute, the people they were currently auditioning for the tribute band, anyone who had been in WWRY ever, and two huge international stars who declared themselves directly inspired by Queen and who were already booked for the event.

But they decided to go with a guy they'd met on a reality TV show a couple years earlier.

I dunno. I guess they must have had their reasons.

And they have expressed there reasons in many interviews:
A few reasons which I remember for example:
- AL has a voice in million
- AL has a great stage charisma
- AL is a very nice guy to work with
- AL is theatrical and divo and he is very suitable for Queen's music

you joke but that is a likely scenario as Adam Lambert most likely cannot command the same share of money that Paul Rodgers can

dunno how QPR shared their income, but rest assured that lambert gets a much smaller paycheck than Paul Rodgers.
Also; I can't imagine lambert ever in a million years disagreeing to anything Brian and Roger suggest / tell him to do. I'm sure he's an obedient yes man

Yup, probably. He even agreed to the opinion to wear a Muppet costume and walk like a tart during Dragon Attack during the London shows :D.

Seriously though, I think it is fair to assume that "creative differences" started to show between Paul and Brian in 2008 that essentially ended this collaboration. And that seems to be a red thread in Paul Rodgers' history with bands. He might not be the easiest guy to work with creatively... and the same can be said about Brian (he even admits that himself). Brian's statements that working with somebody needs to be easy (or something to that extent) in the last couple of interviews were clearly an indication and in my mind a euphemism for "the guy who wants to work with us has to agree."

Hmmm. Let's imagine that conversation....

Moscow. Just before the first Q + AL concert. Adam enters the Brian/Roger dressing room.

Adam: You wanted to see me?

Brian: Yes. We just had a few notes about your performance...

Adam: Is it about "Fat Bottomed Girls?" I know I came in a little early...

Brian: No, no. It's, ah...

Roger: "Dragon Attack." We just have a small suggestion.

(Roger pulls out a shaggy red jacket.)

Roger: A costume change!

Adam: You want me to dress up like Elmo?

Brian: Well...

Roger: (quickly) It's one of Freddie's jackets.

Adam: Um... That's a Blondes jacket. I was at their show.

(Brian and Roger exchange a guilty look.)

Brian: What Roger meant was, Freddie would have loved this jacket.

Roger: R--ight. That's what I meant. So, could you wear it during the song?

(Adam tries it on.)

Adam: I guess. It's not exactly my color.

Roger: That's great. And... could you prance a bit?

(He demonstrates a crane-like dance.)

Adam: What? Like this? (He imitates Roger's flailing movements.)

Roger: Perfect!

(Brian nods and gives a thumb's up.)

Adam: All right. If you really think Freddie would want me to do this.

Roger: He would. I promise you.

(Adam leaves with the jacket. Roger turns to Brian triumphantly.)

Roger: I told you I could get him to do it! You owe me five pounds!

I saw Queen + Paul Rodgers in 2008, and also watched Adam's journey through American Idol, and both of them are good singers, but neither of them could fit into Freddie's shoes. As for who is better suited to singing Queen songs (out of Paul and Adam), would have to be Paul, as Adam's voice is actually more pop-rock than full-on rock.

Two questions:

Rodgers or Lambert?

Lambert, his voice is closer to Freddie's, I think he fits Queen better.

Rock or Pop?

Rock, of course. Some people will see it as contradictory to pick Lambert over Rodgers but strongly preferring rock over pop. However, I don't give a f*ck. :P
