Roger Taylor

Strange Frontier (Rare 1984 UK 3-track 12"" vinyl single including:

- I Cry For You
- 2 Sharp Pencils Get Bad

I heard 2 Sharp Pencils for the first time today. Surprisingly different, and unexpected. I liked it!

Anyone else heard of this track ? I hope this will be on "The Lot" too.

Two Sharp Pencils made me laugh when I first heard it. It always reminded me of Laurie Anderson.

I just listened to it again and it still makes me laugh! I really like this track. It's got a real "Hot Space" vibe to it. I wonder if he wrote it around that time?
I was told a million times

How the hell did Roger get that processed low voice on that song? I've always wondered about that :-P

TWO SHARP PENCILS (GET BAD)

Here comes a dude
Get a look at that guy

Ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba
Na na ba ba ba da da da

Give me 'b' give me 'a' give me 'd'
Give me one two three
Give me one two three

Now there was a young man from Dundee
Got stung on the knee by a wasp
And asked if it hurt said no not a bit
He can do it again if he wants to
Again if he wants to
Do it again if he wants to
It's bad
Real bad

It's a crazy world full of crazy dudes
If we all get crazy we can boogie through
Yeah

Say give me two sharp pencils
Give me peace for days
It's bad
That's bad
Get bad

Alright
That's bad
Get bad
Not bad

There's a cute young chick from Bude
Went for a swim in a lake
When a man in a punt stuck the pole over the edge
Said you can't swim here it's private
That's bad
Get bad

Give me 'b' give me 'a' give me 'd'
Give me one two three
That's bad
Ba ba

It's a crazy world full of crazy dudes
If we all get crazy we can boogie through
Get bad
Bad
Get bad
That's bad
Mmmm
Alright

Give me 'b' give me 'a' give me 'd'
Give me one two three
That's bad
Get bad
Get bad

Back then there would only be one way to do that - set the tape to run fast and sing it, then when the tape is slowed back to the normal speed you have the low vocals. These days it's easy with digital manipulation.

I am not sure it was like that, because I played it on Audacity, ran it faster, but was not able to hear Rogers voice. It still sounded like another guy.

Perhaps someone could ask him at his facebook site.

Around a similar sort of time was the intro to One Vision, does THAT sound like Freddie and Brian?

We know it is, but I think they did dick around with the tape a bit.

I also think it might be fair to say that some of the vocals on People On Streets (Mashed) don't sound particularly like Roger, (OK, maybe after a six month holiday in the Caribbean, then), but they ARE credited to Arty, which he later confirmed is the phonetics for RT.

As regards Two Sharp Pencils, epic. Better than half the stuff on Shove It, that's for sure.

I always thought that Two Sharp Pencils would have gone down a storm in the clubs at the time & maybe could have turned into one of those Underground hits that turns massive through word of mouth & then gets into the U.K. charts (a bit like Freddie's Remix of ' Living on my own ')

Hmmm, I wouldn't go THAT far.

It's a bit of a novelty record, like Bob The Builder, Teletubbies Say Eh-Oh, or Mister Blobby.

Comparing it to Living On My Own, is a bit like farting in a lift, wrong on SO many levels.

LOl - I wouldn't for one minute compare it to Freddie's Remix but TSP with a little extra work could IMO gone on to be a surprising hit for Roger as was the Freddie one.
