Re: The QOL Technical Support Thread

Postby Simon » Sat Sep 01, 2012 4:27 pm

Today I needed to look at a website I didn't have the url of. So I googled it and clicked the google result.
To my surprise I was redirdected to a different search site with the usal stuff "penis enlargement" "viagra" etc.
As amusing as that may be, I was of course alarmed that my PC might be attacked by a virus etc.
I used four different programmes and they all give me green light...
So, my question is this: Is it possible that Google results might be redirected to other sites? If I enter the URL itself then I reach the desired website, if I click the search result, it still leads to this strange site.

So, if there is a bold person out there who has a decent anti virus software on his/her pc, could you google for the website sharpweb.org. It's the website of the Society for the history of authorship, Reading and Publishing, so nothing nasty.

the direct link works perfectly:
http://www.sharpweb.org

but the link via google when searching "sharpweb" leads to this strange site...

N.B. All other searches seem fine and lead to the desired pages.

Any help?

Very odd. I know Google are working on eliminating this kind of thing. When you hover over the link it does show up as the correct site, but clicking takes you somewhere else entirely. When I tried it I got a Google page saying the DNS Lookup failed and couldn't take me there, but the URL was something totally wrong.

It might be worth reporting it to Google to look at (or even Sharpweb themselves).

Thanks for checking it out. So you get directed somewhere else as well? That would eliminate the possibility that I have a virus or some malware.
I already wrote to Sharpweb. Might send the same to Google as well.

It's a virus/adware infection. Google is usually the one affected because everyone uses it. The virus gets on your PC and then when you click a website you've found in Google, a little program tells your browser to take you to another site, sometimes one containing more viruses.

Try this link to repair your HOSTS file in case any rogue entries have been added

Are you sure? I have checked my PC with Malwarebytes and three similar programmes. My PC seems just fine according to these programmes... why then is Weeman having the same probblem? Because he has the same virus?

And what happens if I reset the Hosts file? Do I lose settings etc? Never did this befor, nor do I have any clue what it means :nervous: .

I'm absolutely sure, 5.5 years as a computer technician tells me so, I see this all the time :P

Run ComboFix as it'll find things Malwarebytes won't.

Your HOSTS file should be empty, only advanced users (like server administrators and stuff) and viruses will do anything with a HOSTS file.

Well, I did everything as described by you and it is still the same. This search entry leads to the strange site, all other searches are fine.
Not that I don't appreciate your help (I really do and trust you... you got chucks in your avatar, that's good enough for me), but how do you explain that Weeman also had the same problem. Do you get directly to the website when clicking on the google link?

Brb while I shoot myself.

I should have read the post properly. You're right, it is a Google problem, not to do with your computer   I get the same. I guess the site has been hacked.

Thanks for checking... no, the site is fine... when you use the url directly in the browser, it is ok. It is the google search result that leads to the strange site...

Fuck, I spent the whole damn afternoon updating and securing my computer... all I wanted to do was to check something for my phd... I had such a great run... now I am annoyed and tired... pah  .

Thanks again for your advice anyway. At least now I know that my computer is malware-free and I don't do too shitty protecting my digital stuff ;).

If anyone is interested: The website in question just answered and told me that they had this problem already a couple of months ago and are trying to fix it.
Really weird that Google search results can be manipulated... Is this REALLY Queenonline here...? This is like the Matrix...

Hmmm. Not sure if I like the idea.
Do you/anyone have any more info about it?

Not like any of us are getting a choice, Microsoft bought Skype and they've decided to utilise that instead of the WLM system. Guess it makes sense from their point of view financially.

Not massively happy about it myself as although I have a Skype account I rarely use it but I use MSN daily, don't really want to have to have two seperate accounts as I use them for two totally different groups of people and don't really want to merge the two, but I guess I'm going to have to.

Thanks, and I'm with you on every word. I may delete my MSN completely after all. I'm giving it some thought.
If not, what happens to all the emails, would/could that be transferred to Skype as well?
