Yep, patently the best thing to have when you're feeling depressed, is a depressant.

Honestly...I drank because I was/am depressed and wanted to block out certain things.
I say that as someone who knows the damage and heartache drinking too much can do. I've recently lost my Uncle, I think he would still be alive if not for his drinking. That is a horrible feeling.

When people call it a depressant, they don't mean it makes you depressed. It slows down reactions and cognition, therefore it's classed as a depressant (in the same way that heroin is specifically a respiratory depressant). Alcohol does also act as a serotonin agonist (happy hormone), causes dopamine release (more happy stuff) and increases endorphins (more happy), so the effects it has on mood are complex.

Pharmacology aside, I've always found truth in the rule of thumb that if you're happy, alcohol will make you happier, and if you're sad it will make you sadder.

Not that I've started to drink more regularly, I can see why people like to drink socially.

It certainly is a depressant as you say, and makes it difficult to concentrate on things you would take for granted when you're sober. It's good when you want to forget something, but it's bad if you have to concentrate e.g. on playing music...

I can also see that it makes easier to interact with the people you already like, but it can also make you do things you wouldn't do when you're sober.

There are times when I have drank alcohol to be (both literally and figuratively) numb, but I definitely prefer to drink when I want to enjoy the company of friends.

Some people drink to try and escape their reality, I guess it's just a way of helping them cope with it.

The problem is that sometimes you need to face up to reality and just accept it. Many a relationship has critically depended on both parties living their reality, and not having one of them constantly trying to get away from it.

I agree. I had an ex with addictions, funny thing is while we were together I rarely drank. I was too busy trying to support him in his struggle.
I moved nearly across the country 11 years ago. That is when I started to drink more because I missed home, my extended family. I have had a few big scares in recent years, which drinking didn't help at all. The things I've said and done while drinking, I never would have done otherwise. Even knowing drinking played a big part of my Uncle's death...I still crave and want to drink. Thankfully I have not done so, I'm trying mighty hard not to give in. I do tip my hat off to people who can cut back or give it up altogether.

I've managed to cut back on my drinking.
It used to be a few beers during the practice and a few afterwards, and now I've had a total of two pints in the past month.

I came to the conclusion that drinking was all about trying to fit in to the crowd, and there's no point in drinking when it doesn't actually help you fitting in. :-P

The side effect from this is that I'm now losing weight 0.5 kg per week. :?
