New Year's Resolutions

Postby Roger » Sun Dec 31, 2017 2:30 pm

An opportunity to use an entirely artificial, arbitrary moment based loosely on the earth's rotation and orbit as a stimulus for life change.

Probably not a dreadful idea though.

Anyone got any ideas?

I said last year that I was going to cut out sugar. Well, the jar of sweetener is still in the cupboard, unopened. I really need to get on with it, 'cos I have loads and loads of the stuff!

I need to reduce the alcohol too, because that has steadily crept upwards too.

See you in 12 months to say the same things... :P

I have no fewer than twelve!

    1-3. These are all work-related
    4. Run 600km
    5. Cycle 1500km
    6. Summit a peak (must be one I haven't done before and must be a reasonable height)
    7. Lose 10% of my current weight
    8. Improve general fitness
    9. Reduce alcohol intake
    10. Give platelets at least 6 times
    11. Mindfulness
    12. Communicate more effectively

1. Improve my health by whatever means possible
2. Spend more time with family and value them more
3. Appreciate the small things in life and generally be less of an arsehole to others.

This might be odd, but oh well. I want to learn more about vegan cooking.
I want to read 30 books. I've read so little this year, it seems.
I have to make a couple of huge decisions. Do I stay put, or do I go and start over?

This topic reminded me to have a look at what I wrote last year...
I felt like I had resolved to do something, but I couldn't remember what it was.

Spoiler! :
I promised to actually learn to play one of the drums I've been doodling with, and I suppose that's more or less worked out. This season I've basically concentrated on just one instrument, and I'm at the point where I can just about manage on my own when the rest of the section is away.

This year my resolution is about my studies.
I'm going to study throughout the whole semester, and not just on the last week before the final exams.
I had good grades on the first semester, but I hope the bar will be raised for the following courses. I hope you actually have to work for your University degree. :P

I did manage to cut down on the alcohol last year (even though it wasn't an actual resolution), so maybe next year the same will happen with sugar?

Wtf is that? Have you been reading Brian May's Instagram again?

I don't have NY resolutions this year. I'm moving to Japan in Feb and I hope I get a job and a flat quickly. That's it.

My 2017 ethos was to remove everything from my life that made me feel bad, and I did just that so I had a generally positive year.

Oh wow, P.T!!! Japan! Can you speak Japanese? Will you be looking to get into a band? I love Japan and Japanese culture. You are so lucky! That is the one and only place outside the US that I would love to live but that won't ever happen. Not enough time. Good luck to you, though and congrats! :-D

For me, I want to learn about 4-kanji proverbs and what they really are and how to apply them to my own life if that's possible.

Like this.

Kanji Pronunciation Meaning
以心伝心 Ishin denshin heart-to-heart communication / to have a tacit understanding
一期一会 Ichigo ichie meeting only once in a lifetime / Every encounter is treasures, because there may be no reunion.
一騎当千 Ikki tousen to have capability to be equal to 1000 persons
一刻千金 Ikkoku senkin Every moment is precious.
一生懸命 Isshou kenmei all one's might / one's whole heart / desperately
一心同体 Isshin doutai one flesh / to be one body and soul

Brian May has spoken about it but it’s gained attention elsewhere too. For example, my union has given all its members two free months of full subscription to Headspace, which is nice of them I suppose.

I want to flee this rock soon as well (that is in fact resolution #2), probably for a different collection of islands a few thousand miles due south (plus a bit of east) of yours. - it won’t be any earlier than August and might be as late as December. It’s a sinking ship and it’s going to get a lot worse I think. We shall see.
