What happens if we 100% legalise drugs?

This is the place for topical debate and discussion about anything in the world (non-Queen related).

so anyway I finished this book last night, and it's pretty good
http://www.amazon.com/Art-Suppression-P ... 0956226531

Best part (although I found better accounts online) is describing how/why the US government deliberately poisoned the alcohol supply during prohibition.

A lot less or no deaths caused by bad drugs.

Weed...solves many problems, that wonderful plant. Relaxes an over-active mind, reduces the effects of depression...It even got me through a Will Ferrell movie once.

I would suggest a mirror to remind oneself of their own masculinity should suffice.

Alcohol puts me to sleep. Marijuana doesn't really do much for me. I think it's legal for medical use in Oregon because there's a "Medical Marijuana Clinic" about a mile away. Which may become important to me, but luckily hasn't so far.

(L-glutamine is my drug of choice.)

So, I don't have any personal reasons to favor legalization, but I think it would make less work for police -- and allow them to concentrate on better priorities.

This is a very interesting article from the New Yorker about crime, ending with a plea to stop prosecuting drug users:

The Caging of America

I would also like to see marijuana legalized because it's Oregon's largest cash crop, and it would really help our state government to tax it properly.

This is interesting. A guy did 45 self-portraits on 45 various drugs or cocktails of drugs:

http://bryanlewissaunders.org/drugs/

It's not a very scientific experiment: The guy is presumably an artist, and as such is likely to be quite creative and therefore possibly quite suggestible, and also he'll have felt under pressure to come up with a different painting each day. I'm sure that if he'd simply tried to copy a photograph of himself, the results would be fairly similar each time; the only differences would have been that some would be better than others. For many of them, he seems to have drawn a representation of what the drug does, which isn't exactly the same as what he claims to have been attempting.

Nonetheless, it's a fascinating insight into the effect drugs have on people, even if he has also thrown in a big dose of artistic license. I mean, cephalexin is just an antibiotic - the painting was probably a reflection of him feeling ill rather than of the drug.

It's just a shame he didn't do one while on acid.

Ha, further exploration of his website reveals that he has a schizotypal personality disorder.

So when I said "possibly quite suggestible", that was a massive understatement.

Hahaha...the thread started over a year ago though. I wonder why I did that? I'll have to try to remember now!

Is there any science in the idea that legalising pot, just moves the goalposts, and so more people are likely to progress to the harder stuff?

I'm not sure, myself. I've never really felt any drive to experiment with anything above and beyond pot, and being honest, I haven't done that too often either.
