Slutwalk

Postby Taryn » Thu May 12, 2011 12:02 am

This protest movement started in Canada after a police officer who was giving a talk about health and safety to a group of students at a school in Toronto said “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimised”.

There is shortly to be a Slutwalk in the Uk.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-13332349

The results of several polls and surveys in the UK over the last few years indicate that up to a third of the population agree with Police Constable Michael Sanguinetti.

What do you think?

No. I actually think the movie "The Accused" successfully argued this point conclusively. Argument provides an "out" or " excuse" for assaults. There is never any reason or excuse for assaults, even if the lady is doing naked cartwheels in front of you.

"Slut" is what...some woman who takes ownership of her sexuality and makes her own decisions on how she will use it instead of bowing to patriarchal bullshit that tells her that men own her sexuality? I'll proudly wear that title.

Perhaps we should turn it around and direct the anger towards those who are actually doing the victimizing. If a man doesn't have enough control over his cock to resist raping women in halter tops and shorts, he should have his cock removed. For the safety of society.

Good point LG,but I can't see anyone admitting to voting that way, least of all defending it.

They have similar equal rights laws in Bermuda, but there it's illegal for a man to walk down the road topless. My mate got approached by a female copper asking him to put his tee-shirt back on and he initially thought she was flirting...

Oooh, I like those laws. There's far too many moobs on display for my liking!

I'm proud of my moobs

Of course it's stupid to use words like slut, but there is a small point here somewhere which is usually forgotten when this topic is discussed...

Everybody's free to dress in the way they want, but they must also understand the possible consequences of that choice. If they want to avoid unnecessary risks at any cost, they should change they way they dress in some circumstances. At night, in bad neighbourhoods, when they're drunk, etc.

I have the right to be pissed out of my mind at midnight, carry a shopping bag full of cash with me at the central railway station, and expect not to be robbed... It's just incredibly stupid to do that, and I can influence the odds of being targeted if I don't act in that way.

Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should do it. :?

Trying to see it from a balanced perspective.

How many of you who think dressing shouldn't attract criminality, also believe Madeline McCann's parents are at least partially culpable for her disappearance, by their neglect?

As Tero says, it's not some kind of Utopia we live in, and there's a lot we as individuals can do to help decide how we get round, or minimise the risks we have to deal with.
What is left of your dream?

Needless to say a woman does not even have to dress 'sexy' for a rape to happen.

I know it, and every reasonable person knows it. It still doesn't mean that you can't take any precautions.

It's like having an extra insurance.
Under normal circumstances it doesn't make anu difference, but there might be that one set of circumstances where you could use it. It's up to everybody to decide for themselves whether they take that extra precaution, or whether they would rather accept the slightly bigger risk.

The statistics over here say that most rapes happen at night, when you're drunk, and with people you've just met.
It doesn't mean that you should only walk out in broad daylight and never meet new people, but it does say the potential victims can choose to reduce their risk with their own actions.

Then in that case, the policeman's advice to girls shouldn't be not to dress up as sluts, but to take precautions - such as carry mace or learn to defend yourself, instead of giving defines lawyers all over the world a defense that 1/3 of the world seem to accept.

Tell you what Tero, why don't women everywhere stay indoors and never leave their homes ? There are risks everywhere, I could go to the corner store and have the crap knocked out me(oddly enough I wasn't dressed sexy then!) its been known to happen.
