Scary stuff Inny. Is this a record breaking year for weather related events in the States?

From what I have witnessed in my lifetime, hell yes, it is. I have never seen anything like it. Just over last weekend, there were more tornadoes or at least the warnings for them right between the Iowa and Missouri borders, near Kansas City. This house faces that direction and the sky was the oddest looking clouds I've ever seen, except for when I lived in Houston and was down in Galveston when a storm came in off the ocean. The clouds were moving VERY fast and they almost looked like they were touching the ground. All damn night long, lightening strikes to the ground, over and over and over. It scared the shit outta me because I could see them as I was sitting here facing out that door and it looked like freakin fireworks going off, non stop. Only it wasn't fireworks and it wasn't fun, it was scary as hell. I couldn't go to sleep until after daylight because my bed is right up against the wall and you could just hear this stuff going off left and right, non stop. The entire southern sky from left to right, lightening, lightening and more lightening and it had been doing this for days. Today and yesterday were the first two days in a row we haven't had storms like that every night.

Yikes...It reminds me of last year when back home and here when there was wild and crazy weather. We got off easy compared to some. Would you mind if I ask you about how the people of Joplin are doing?

All I can tell you about the people there in Joplin is that my friend, Joe had to move 65 miles away to find a residence and now has to travel that and back every day to get back and forth to work. My friend, Sarah, had to move her 2 children and herself into her parent's house in Neosho which is around 20 miles south of Joplin. The rest are now starting to move into FEMA trailers.

Oh and that fire in Los Alamos County which is a horrid thing in itself with all the wildlife dying and homes burning, has already burned 44,000 acres. It's now endangering the nation's main nuclear weapons lab.

My heart still goes out to them and everyone affected. Gosh if the fire makes it to the lab! I will look that up once I can...how close is it atm?

I have just seen on the ticker from CNN that the lab is not in danger(a police or fire chief said it) I would not assume that just yet.

Oh yea, I am reading that as well but you know they would say that in order to stop mass panic and all that. Certain government officials or departments are recommending that all citizens, all over the country, be relocted to at least 50 miles away from any nuclear plant, just in case of a disaster. They said in one case in New York, it would mean relocating 17 MILLION people. WOAH.

We live less than 50 miles from the closest one, here.

I think the truth should be told, give people enough time to get away. Better safe than sorry...50 miles is still too close IMO!

Would you be kind enough to point me in the direction of the remark please. Maybe it is the one about the Milly Dowler case which I thought might have sparked a debate but did not so went into the news thread.

The point I am making is quite simple. After this long, why do we need a seperate thread for the Americas? We have discussed all sorts in the other thread from all over the world including the USA. Still as Sheryl Crow once said.......

Everyday is a Winding Road?

All I Wanna Do Is Have Some Fun?

A Change Would Do You Good?

I'm not getting there, am I?
What is left of your dream?
Just the words on your stone.
A man who learnt how to teach,
But forgot how to learn.

This one from the other news thread *You have literally no idea what goes on in the UK. I don't wish to be disrespectful but you might want to do a bit of checking before stepping into a debate like this*. After that, but not for that reason alone, I decided to make this thread. Anyone can post in it, I am not stopping, or will not stop, people from other countries from posting in this thread if they so wish.
