In the news today (North American version)

This is the place for topical debate and discussion about anything in the world (non-Queen related).

News is news, Icy. Confine yourself to the stuff that's local to you, and suddenly the world gets that bit smaller.

The only reason why the thread seems populated by UK and European news, is down to the percentage of posters on the board from that area. I think we have about 15-20 generally active Stateside posters here, that I can think of, which from the people who've got a significant post count, is roughly err, 10%.

You do what you feel is right, though. :)

ah that nugget about the scroungers. Still think fd and I were on the ball though.

I wasn't disagreeing what you and fd said about scroungers, JLP. It was only when he got personal with me, thats what I had an issue with. He apologised. I had no idea starting this thread would cause such a fuss.

I wish people on this website would stop bitching all the damn time. What harm is this thread doing anyone? NONE.

I posted about the Joplin tornadoes in the "regular" thread. No one answered, no one commented, no one cared. I mentioned Casey & Caylee Anthony case which is FAR WORSE in many ways than the Madeleine McCann case in many ways. NO ONE ANSWERED. But all of you sure as hell kept posting right between and after anything I posted about them, basically covering them up. The posts got lost! So, YEA, I DO think there is a need for this. And if it's here, what harm, specifically, is it doing the board?

Good points Inny, thanks. I am so relived Canada Post workers are back to work, as much as I use the net/email, there is still a great need for postal services.

Yea, very good news about the postal strike ending. So many ppl here in the US with orders going to Canada and they couldn't send anything. Thank goodness the Canadian buyers have all been real dolls about it and very understanding. They don't have to be, either, according to eBay and PayPal.

Personally, I was expecting some important documents before the strike happened...had to pay much more by courier for it to make it's way to me.

REALLY not wanting to piss off any Americans, but you do kind of possess this culture where anything anybody else can do, you guys can ALWAYS do it bigger and better.

From college shootings, right through to serial killers, and religious sects committing mass suicide. Anything that CAN go pear-shaped, WILL almost without any doubt, monumentally go pear-shaped. We'll get someone flying a Cessna into a barn, you'll get two 767s into not one, but a pair of adjacent skyscrapers.

I know. This 'sort of stuff' happens in the rest of the world too, but usually only condensed as it is in soap operas, not real life.

Without doubt you are the most newsworthy country on the planet, but often it's so bloody dramatic, it IS a bit like a soap opera.

I disagree with your first statement - how can having a child abducted and never knowing her fate be 'FAR WORSE in many ways' than having a child murdered? Both are terrible, but not ever knowing is worse to me.

No-one answered because the case isn't familiar outside the USA - it's had a little covereage since but at the time you posted there'd been hardly any. Why other Americans didn't post about it I don't know.

The first I heard about the 2 cases mentioned was from CTV(a popular Canadian channel). I like how more in depth CNN and the BBC are with news. I agree with you not knowing about a childs whereabouts is worse. After all this time one would think/hope there would be something by now.
