In the news today (North American version)

This is the place for topical debate and discussion about anything in the world (non-Queen related).

From college shootings, right through to serial killers, and religious sects committing mass suicide. Anything that CAN go pear-shaped, WILL almost without any doubt, monumentally go pear-shaped. We'll get someone flying a Cessna into a barn, you'll get two 767s into not one, but a pair of adjacent skyscrapers.

I know. This 'sort of stuff' happens in the rest of the world too, but usually only condensed as it is in soap operas, not real life.

Without doubt you are the most newsworthy country on the planet, but often it's so bloody dramatic, it IS a bit like a soap opera.

Maybe it has to do with the size of this country and the total population? Yea, I think so. In most cases, I believe, one of our states, out of 50 is the same size as all of the UK or at least England so that would be a minimum of 50 times more likely to happen because of sheer volume.

I disagree with your first statement - how can having a child abducted and never knowing her fate be 'FAR WORSE in many ways' than having a child murdered? Both are terrible, but not ever knowing is worse to me.

No-one answered because the case isn't familiar outside the USA - it's had a little covereage since but at the time you posted there'd been hardly any. Why other Americans didn't post about it I don't know.

Well, I do think it could be thought of as worse if the mother, herself, planned to murder her 2 year old daughter, than an accident that wasn't thought out by the parent, if that's what actually happened. Both are tragedies, yes. But if Casey Anthony actually planned her daughter's death, then drove around with the child's body in the trunk of her car for around a week or so, that's pretty damned bad. But right now, it's still an "if".

Funny you say it isn't International news because I read about it months ago on the Daily Mail, online. Just sayin...

So, Casey rejected her right to take the stand, Thursday. Now what?

Yea, there is no forthcoming answers about both cases...and it has been newsworthy for at least a couple of years. I hope for answers, but as Ive said on the old board, it does not seem likely there will be for Caylee.

I don't know Inny. I was busy earlier, and tried to record the courtroom goings on, but of course it didn't work. Was there a reason given why she didn't take the stand?

I don't know but I have been too sick and too busy at the same time to be able to look it up. I just saw it as headlines when I signed online. I'll try to look it up but I am really pressed for time, here, at the moment.

Yes, there's a whole forum or there's actually a bunch of them regarding her. Check there.

Inny, I could not find out exactly why she did not take the stand, if possible I will search news sites later today. Some really bad postings from some people about the case on fb...yikes!

Yea, they are out for blood and want the death penalty ASAP.

June 30, 2011|By Anthony Colarossi, Orlando Sentinel

In the end, she couldn't do it: Casey Anthony could not muster the will, the motivation, the guts or whatever else it would take to tell her version of what happened to her daughter, Caylee, three years ago.

Minutes after she told Chief Judge Belvin Perry she would not take the stand Thursday, Casey Anthony's defense team rested its case — not nearly fulfilling the many wild promises made in defense attorney José Baez's opening statement in late May.

None of that may matter, though, if jurors find credibility in the defense team's assault on the prosecution's case — and find reasonable doubt. The state will call more rebuttal witnesses today to shore up any damage prosecutors think the defense may have done to their case.

On Thursday, though, most experts watching the case agreed there was too much risk in allowing the 25-year-old to take the stand. Casey Anthony is charged with first-degree murder in daughter Caylee Marie's 2008 death. She faces a possible death sentence if convicted.

"I'm sure the jury wanted to hear from Casey Anthony," said forensic trial consultant Dean Tong, based in the Tampa Bay area. But Tong explained Baez "was probably prudent not to allow his client to testify."

She would have faced questions about a monthlong series of lies after her daughter's disappearance. She would have been hammered about her partying, staying at her boyfriend's place, getting the "Bella Vita" tattoo. Most importantly, she would have had to directly accuse her father of sexual abuse.

"I think Baez made the right move by not putting her on the stand," Tong said. "It would have been a brutal and bloody and angry cross-examination had it come to fruition."

Instead of hearing Casey's story firsthand, jurors just heard her answer a few quick questions posed by Perry.

"Is it your decision not to testify?" Perry asked.

"Yes, sir," said Casey Anthony, while agreeing she was not being forced or pressured to make that decision.

Seeds of doubt?

Philip Anthony, chief executive officer of DecisionQuest trial consulting, said in not putting Casey Anthony on the stand, the defense "put on a trial by inference" by raising the suggestion that she suffered abuse in her home. A couple of witnesses testified Casey Anthony talked briefly about the molestation.

Dang!!! They've been live streaming the entire trial!

http://www.ustream.tv/caseyanthonytrial

The cams aren't on right now because court is over for the day but apparently they will be in court on Sunday and Monday for sure, possibly tomorrow as well. Since when did they have court on the weekend and federal holidays???

There's a chatroom and also a social stream running along side the stream window, too, just like with the owlboxes.

I think I will pass on that, too graphic at times for my tastes even on the news.
