St. Petersburg, Florida - It was the day Casey Anthony's defense team had been waiting for.
Dr. Werner Spitz, a former medical examiner, who performed a second autopsy on Caylee's remains, took the stand to begin to lay out his theory that Caylee drowned.
Casey Anthony is accused of suffocating her daughter, Caylee, 2, with duct tape and dumping the body in the woods near her family's home in 2008.
The defense says Caylee's drowned in the family pool.
Dr. Spitz said he cannot rule out that Caylee died accidentally, although he admitted he could not determine a cause or manner of death.
He said that he believes the duct tape found with Caylee's remains was probably put there after the body had decomposed, perhaps to keep the lower jaw attached to the rest of the skull.
"If the duct tape was attached to the face, there would have been DNA from the face on the duct tape," Dr. Spitz said.
Casey Anthony hid her face in her hand and started crying as her defense team showed Spitz a picture of the inside of Caylee's skull.
Spitz explained that he had to cut open Caylee's skull to conduct his second autopsy, noting that it is standard protocol and should have been done in the first autopsy.
