MATHs FANS, COME TO MY AID
1*3=0.3recuring.
0.3recuring*3=0.9recurng.

So 0.9recuring=1.

I think I just broke maths.

0.9999 recurring does equal 1. They're the same number. They look different, but they are in fact the same, in the same way, that, say, 3 and SQRT9 are the same.

It's like the paradox of the tortoise beating the hare. For the tortoise to beat the hare, first he has to overtake him. Easy enough, as the hare is sleeping under a tree or whatever the story was. But for him to vertake him, he first has to half the distance between them. Before he can do that, he has to cover a quarter of that distance. And before he can do that, he has to cover a sixteenth. In fact, there's an infinite number of tasks he has to complete before he can even catch up with the hare, so it's impossible.

But it is possible, obviously. Because 1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 + 1/16... = 1. Not 0.999.

Here's another mindfuck...how many numbers are there?

An infinite number?

I agree.

So how many even numbers are there?

And that is why the Universe CAN'T be expanding. :P

Fair point. Got fission and fusion caught up in the blender.

Let's reword that then.

Before they'd ever tested a large scale hydrogen bomb, how were they aware at what point the reaction of fusion would fizzle out. As I understand it, both fission and fusion weapons use the natural elements around them to magnify the effects of the reaction.

Because of how people must have thought back then, the concept these f*ckers "could" have originated on another planet, wouldn't have even been considered. Plausible theory? Let's be a tad honest and admit it's as plausible as somebody walking on water, or feeding five thousand people with half a dozen mackerel and two Tiger loaves.

If you'd have made a "genie" out of fireworks type gunpowder chemicals in the 1300's, somebody would have had you in a village ducking chair, they were that ignorant. Given this level of understanding, a million and one things could be "another" explanation behind stories in the Christian bible and the Koran.

I thought you may have done, but I wasn't quite sure as there's plenty of weird psychicsy stuff that I know literally nothing about!

My understanding is that nuclear fusion is the fusion of two hydrogen atoms to make a helium atom - but because the helium nucleus contains two protons, it needs two neutrons to stabilise it, which a normal hydrogen atom doesn't have, so fusion can only take place when there's plenty of deuterium ("heavy hydrogen"). I'm not sure whether they just have big stores of deuterium strapped to the bomb, or if the initial nuclear reaction also somehow converts some hydrogen to deuterium, but either way, it'll provide a fairly strict limitation to the extent of the reaction.

My point was solely that when you start a chain reaction, that has never been done before, it's a bit like being blindfolded, spun round a dozen times, and asked to keep the ball towards the goal. You might have an idea where the goal is, but can you be 100% certain?

If The Universe is infinite, but is expanding, it has to have something to expand into...bigger infinity?

Or, the universe is all that there is and it's growing. I know that makes no sense, but nothing about the universe is kind to common sense. Or it's just "infinite" because it is infinitely expanding, and because the curvature of space-time means that no matter how far or quickly we travelled, we'd just wind up back where we started.

But at least we know that the universe is flat. :P

That's probably what the Christians in the 1400s actually meant :P

Universe, Universal

Space (apart from being a Brian May track) is just like this board. Doesn't matter which forum you're in, you'll find common or related themes. Somebody mention Jesus?

Just remember...

Try and say the following "Tsud eht setib eno rehtona", and then get your friend to tell you if you said ANYTHING that sounds even remotely like "It's fun to smoke marajuana!"

Curiously, the only time it EVER does, is when you HAVE just smoked a LOT of the stuff.

Yeah play a record backwards and it says whatever the record says forwards, backwards, so unless any of the sumbliminally messaging rock bands of the 70s/80s were very, very clever, it's unlikely there were any messages in their backwards records. It makes sense though, I mean what was whoever started that smoking to have decided to play a record backwards?

But isn't the Universe just everything? If the Universe has limits, then what's beyond it, because surely if there was absolutely nothing, then even that nothingness would be part of the Universe. The only way "the Universe" can be infinitely expanding, (in my mind :P ) is if what that actually means is that all the matter in the universe is expanding outwards into more Universe.
