From the few extracts I've had the sheer misfortune to read, this book is incredibly poorly written. And if any woman gets off on this shite, she must have an absolute shit sex life, actually non-existent.

It was said in some interview that E.L. James based the book on a friend of hers. Judging by the contents, I think she based it on herself...

Only a thought

Yes, it is indeed poorly written. Annoyingly poor even. Almost horrified to have noticed I was aroused during the first sex scene, even though I did not really know what the guy was actually doing (and it was not even a BDSM scene).
Now with 140 pages into the book I don't know how I will cope with the next 400 pages.
Might have a look at the film after I have finished the novel.

Don't bother. It's as boring as the book.

I read "9 1/2 weeks" years ago. It was based on the author's real experience. It was much better.

I haven't read the book, or seen the movie, and have no intention to do either......

From what I understand it is totally NOT true to how real life BDSM works...not that that'd be totally a bad thing in itself.......and I know where to find some well-written stuff of that nature already anyway.........;)

It was not my intention to read this book to learn about BDSM. It is more the curiosity what this book has that made it such a hype. And I want to be one of the few men who can honestly say "Yes, of course I have read it." Will be a fight though. Already it's hard not to be annoyed by the constant repetitions of phrases. And no, it's not a literary device, it's plain lazy writing.

I deliberately wind people up by saying if it had been written by a man for men, women would be outraged and i really believe that to be true. One of the women I work with actually said, when the film came out, that the cinema would be full of pervy men. What I wonder would that make the women?

I could not get through the books. I found what I read very unsettling to say the least.
ETA~ JLP is quite on the mark above. I've read many people say the same things.

Finally finished it. It was so annoying to read those repetitive phrases over and over and OVER again. "Holy fuck" "He is so hot!" "He smells heavenly" "he cocks his head to the side" "he nuzzles my hair" "the way his trousers hang from his hips, SO hot!" (What the fuck does this mean by the way? How can the way trousers hanging from the hips be so very arousing? Seriously, I don't really understand. I do understand when trousers are very tight and you like the ass etc, but hanging from the hips?)
I am proud to say I did indeed finish it. No interest whatsoever to read the next novels, will read the Wikipedia entries though so I can pretend I did ;).
Two nice things however: First it got me interested in Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles (I bought it years ago and will read it soon). Also I do like the "moral of the story" that you should listen to yourself what you like and don't question it because of social pressures or political correctness. But that's about it.

I think the author of the Twilight series did this same thing.

As for pants hanging off the hips, I have no idea why that would be sexy. It makes me think of that trend where young guys wear jeans that are so large, they're practically falling down.

My reaction is the same as Cher's. Ewww.

The custom of wearing the jeans down around the rear or even lower comes from prison behaviors, for lack of a better word. It was started to let others know the "wearer" was "available".

Source? Interesting nonetheless, I love to annoy those people with homoerotic roots of their fashion statements :) .

Sadly not true. Hasn't stopped me taking the piss out of kids who continue to wear their jeans like socks.

From that article or post, what have you, on snopes:

The practice, which did begin in prisons, worked its way from the hoosegow into hip hop culture. It was adopted by a variety of rap artists, such as Ice-T and Too Short, which enhanced its perceived tough-guy cachet. Sagging can even be taken a step further by wearing the droopy breeches backwards. (Totally Krossed Out, the 1992 debut album of Kriss Kross, shows the pair of 13-year-old rappers doing this.) By 1995 the style had seeped into mainstream teen culture — one no longer needed to be a wannabe "gangsta" to sling 'em low.
