50 Shades Of Grey.

Postby JLP » Sat Jun 30, 2012 1:59 am

Might be a bit too racy to discuss but I suppose it is the must read series.

I haven't read them but I have a question. If a man had written these books for men, would there be an outcry? Would they be classed as porn? I glanced at a couple of pages and it is pretty explicit with sado masochism etc going on. But women I have talked to about the books seem pretty happy with it all.
Come on you Tigers.

I've read the first one, looking forward to reading the other 2. :lookround:
No, I don't think so, but as I say, I've only read the first one, I don't know if the other 2 are better or worse. Some romance novels authored by women or even fanfics are just as steamy.

Haven't read it, no intention to - I know I have no right to pass judgement on something I haven't read, but from what I've heard and from the sort of people who read it, I assume it's lame, light bondage mixed up with emotional claptrap designed to shock and arouse old ladies who are too reserved to do the decent thing and just watch porn. Another stunning example of this is Secretary, one of the most wimpish attempts within popular culture to try to examine fetish. Trying to bring softcore BDSM to the masses is just insulting to the hardworking people who make the effort to do it right.

Yes, if a man was to write this it would be read in a very different light by women - but these books were written by a woman for women - it is my belief that these books were written as a product rather than as literature. There is huge financial potential in people who are too self-restricting to watch or read actual pornography - if everyone is reading it, then it's okay to read it, and you can pretend to enjoy it as a work of fiction rather than as a vibrator with pages.

Yeah I'm not going to read it but working in a bookshop helps you sum up a book without doing, from what I can tell it's just another of these trashy fantasy books for a very specific but huge women's market, kinda masquerading as respectable literature. The BDSM thing is really lame, the internet exists.

It would be different for a man, but that is legitimate, it is surely different for women to right books about women, for women, than for men to, unless it's about men, for men. It's also generally considered less acceptable for women to watch porn, though really I don't see how 50 Shades is a valid alternative. :P

Good points. I am just surprised that women seem to be loving the books when, from what i understand, the woman is being manipulated by Mr Grey.

The series is being sold at our local WalMart...a bit of a shocker.
Did I enjoy the first book...enough to want to read the other two. I don't want to read it for the sex, but the thinking behind it, if that makes sense.

Yes but a woman wrote it, so that's okay, it's just a kind of 'bad guy' fantasy. I don't see the interest in 50 Shades at all, but then almost all 'bestsellers' baffle me.

Yeah I get that.I went into ASDA today and right at the entrance was a huge display of the books. Obviously they know that they are onto a god thing.

@ Belle..it can be women's fantasy too. Not my cup of tea, in fact it took me longer to get through the book than most. It made me think quite a bit.

Yeah that's what I said. I think it can probably only be a women's fantasy, because if it was a man's fantasy surely it wouldn't be so lamely mild and it would be in video form and be found online. :P

SNAP, JLP, I've seen it at WalMart less than a hour ago :P. There is talk of a movie, which will be complicated and rife with conterversy if it goes ahead.
Has a man ever wrote a book along these lines in recent years? I admit these type of books is usually not my usual reading material.
I'm looking forward to the other 2, I hope that doesn't make me sound *bad*.

Yep, tremendously high sales of very low quality literature. :P I had a brilliant customer yesterday, older guy, innocently buying some hobby book, when a young and loud woman interrupted and asked if we had 50 Shades. I said no and tried to carry on, but she said or Louis Spence's autobiography? The guy looked at her and said "Only high quality reading for you then?" :P

There is soft porn and hardcore porn and sometimes it's a blurry line to cross. I do know a couple of guys who like the softer porn more.
Do you work in a bookstore, if so I'm jealous.

This isn't porn at all though, as Trashy said - it's a product; a gimmick to sell a not-very-good book. A successful gimmick at that.

I do yes, of a British chain. It's very much a paying off my significant debts job, than a career choice. :P

My understanding is that this book started as fan fiction involving the vampire and the sulky one from Twilight, and the character names were changed along with some superficial details so that it could be published.

On one hand, I don't think much fine literature started off as fan fiction.

On the other hand, does anyone have those old QOL fan fiction threads saved? I've spotted a niche.
