50 Shades Of Grey.

This is the place for topical debate and discussion about anything in the world (non-Queen related).

In fact, I have read all three and enjoyed them and even more, enjoyed the debate. I don't take them seriously and there is a lot of humour in the books - but not often in the critics

Germany had a similar case a couple of years ago. The novel is called "Feuchtgebiete", an English translation has an almost literal translation of the title called "Wetlands". It is not about BDSM, but about a 16-year-old girl talking about her very kinky sexual experiences. It bordered on the sick now and then, not only because the protagonist is so young but because of what is described there. Partially it aroused a lot of interest because the novel allegedly had some autobiographical elements there and the author is Charlotte Roche, well-known German TV presenter (half British by the way).
After having read the book I also asked myself the question if there had been an uproar had a man written something similar. Charlotte Roche was praised and considered a true feminist of the 21st century criticising the obsession of cleanliness, perfume and shaving of women and thus basically taking everything from the female body away that actually makes them attractive for the male senses. And from that perspective I really estimated the book as a good comment on today's society and what is deemed sexy and erotic.
Other parts are simply disgusting and in my mind just written to shock, for example the protagonist, after having taken too many drugs, eating her own vomit because there might be still some drugs in them so she can experience another high...
I am not going to read 50 Shades of Grey. Not because I am a prude (I don't think I am one), but because literary porn doesn't interest me that much. It seems to be that good novels need to have at least one sex scene. I understand it. It's part of life and sex might reveal another side of a person. However, I think it is extremely difficult to write a good sex scene that doesn't destroy the quality of a novel. There are only so many words to describe an ejaculation or metaphors of the vagina and the penis. And more often than not, it simply doesn't work for me in the context of novels. I much more prefer subtle innuendoes. And after all, Ellen gave me a good summary in the above shown video
To conclude I'd like to paraphrase a German newspaper: The real torture is not to be found in the BDSM scenes anyway, it's the reading experience itself. 'nuff said.

I haven't read this, mainly because the few excepts I have read were written pretty poorly. I did read that it was once Twilight fan fiction.

There is Queen fan fiction? Why does this not surprise me, yet I'm strangely curious. LOL

I always thought fan-fiction was up there with Star Trek + stamp collecting on the sad-o-meter.

Star Trek is a long way from sad. It only gets sad when people dress up in the uniforms and go to conventions.

People always think whatever nerdiness they don't get involved in, is the height of sad. Many people would think posting on a Queen message board, very sad. :P

I haven't read 50 Shades of Grey (nor its sequels), and don't really plan to. At least not now, I've got too huge a pile of books at home waiting for me to read them. :P

Icy, I had no idea you used to work at a library? :D I'm working at a library at the moment myself, it's great fun. :) I'm like you, I could talk about books endlessly. And music. (We've also got CD's and DVD's people can borrow.) By the way, the 50 Shades series is now in the process of being translated into Icelandic, and the first two books have now been published. It's not very long actually since we got the first book at my library.

BTW I LOVED the Brian jokes.

Yea, I did, I loved it, every second even the evening/night I had to stay overnight because of a blizzard :).
Small world. I still have yet to read the 3rd book, but there are of course more books I want to read more. My books these days usually come from second hand shops, I find great books there.

Will be reading the next 2 sometime soon, not sure if I should admit to that especially after just reading Love Is The Cure by Elton.
I'm willing to read almost anything. Hell, I'm pleased that people still read, if it's this, Harry Potter, I think it's all good IMO.
