Of course they could have got stranded on the moon save for a pen.

... Or in a TV studio in the Nevada desert, if you believe the conspiracy theorists.
What is left of your dream?
Just the words on your stone.
A man who learnt how to teach,
But forgot how to learn.

And the retroreflectors on the moon that are used to bounce lasers off to assess the distance between the earth and the moon were presumably emailed up there instead of being left by the Apollo missions!

Like fd and a few others I remember that day so well, the family sitting round the old square box watching it live on TV in black and white then everybody talking about it the next day at school. I can remember going to bed that night and looking up at the moon and thinking "there is a man walking about up there".
RIP the first man on the moon :(

It must have been a hell of an event, plus it was a big royal flush (as in a poker match) for America to get there before the Soviets, after they had managed to get Gagarin into orbit first.
Neil didn't have so much of a choice, I guess because of his experience, poor Michael Collins is the one, though, who people never remember as he sat in the control module.

May Neil send us lightning from all those stars above, we do need it!

I've just posted this over at Yesfans, and it seems appropriate to do the same here.

My earliest childhood memory was at the tender age of five, being woken up at three in the morning by my excited father to watch Neil make his One Small Step. We were all huddled around the TV in our pyjamas and dressing gowns while mum made cocoa, absolutely thrilled at what was happening. When he opened the door of Eagle to set foot on the moon, I vividly remember the tears rolling down my father's cheek- he was a keen astronomer and followed all the space missions, never daring to believe that someone would actually set foot on another world in his lifetime. It was the only time I'd seen dad be that moved by something. Since then, I was avidly keen on the space race, and watched all the Apollo missions. Neil was not just a great American hero, he was one of the great heroes of the Human race, and I will always remember him whenever I look up at the night sky. It hit me like a physical blow to hear the news this morning- precious memories of my childhood came back at the news. Rest in peace, commander Armstrong- now you go to journey beyond the infinite.

He was a legend, but so were the other 11 men who walked on the moon, as were the other 12 who flew with them in the Apollo missions. And let's not forget Gus Grissom who was meant to be the first man to walk on the moon had he not died in a training accident along with Ed White and Roger Chaffee.

Shall we discuss Neil Armstrong and Collins' as well as Aldrin's feat?

bloody hell. It was a great step in space exploration, knowledge and was the beggining of a new era. We can do more than that. Plus it brought a lot in pop culture.

Should have bitten the bullet, paid the £200, and taken a Nikon Coolpix with them. :lookround:

An LEM structural repair kit!

It's a bit pricier than that, Kes- the bacofoil for the LEM was gold!
