I was hearing about this days ago. Clockwise, as far as I know.

You always pass the port to the left (port is left in nautical terms, making it easy to remember).

"Pass the Duchy on the left hand side"

Funnily enough, I say that whenever I go from Plymouth to Tavistock!

But first, the host passes it to the person on the right, giving that one person a glass or half or whatever, then it is passed to the left from there on out. :-)

It's getting deep, this!

I can understand this fully as it is pretty distasteful but do people think the song should be played? I am not sure as it is obvious why the song has been bought but the actual song is not offensive in it's original form.

Of course there is a family who are grieving but are they likely to be listening to Radio 1 and it's chart show?

True, dat, although that's not the reason why port is left. That comes from Viking longships, because their rudder, or steerboard, is on the right-hand side of the ship, so when in port, the ship has to dock on it's left side to avoid damaging it. So, port is to the left, steerboard, or starboard, is to the right.

Aircraft have the same standard. Left wing navigation light - red, right wing - green. + 110 degrees facing aft - white. Red flashing anti-collision beacons (usually mounted one above and one below the fuselage), and white strobes for REALLY being seen.

Hence Daniel, the Elton John song shows pretty much what Bernie Taupin doesn't know about aviation. Cars have "red tail lights", planes and boats don't.

While we're on the subject, This Flight Tonight, the Joni Mitchell song covered by Nazareth. "Up go the flaps, down go the wheels!" I don't think so. The point where you'd need the flaps down the most, is when you've got the undercarriage down, as they increase the chord length of the wing and allow you to still fly at lower airspeeds, so Joni obviously wasn't a pilot when she wrote THAT.

Sorry to be a MASSIVE twat, but Oxford and Cambridge do it differently to each other, and I can never remember which way round it is. I THINK Oxford does it like everyone else, so Cambridge pass to the right.

The right hand would grab the sword from the left, so I believe Port goes the opposite way ;)
