I am tired of my country's obsession with guns

This is the place for topical debate and discussion about anything in the world (non-Queen related).

I belong to a few that state guns aren't allowed. However, moderating is practically nil on some of them. I try to "notify" someone, but rarely is an administrator option available. Generally it goes to the fb police. Fb police was great about removing two porn videos posted from a hacked account, and good that they did, because when the administrator finally got around to reading my pm to her about it, I got my butt chewed for bothering her in her "more important life, than babysitting a sales group." :(

ETA: Still I say, why are these legal in this country? I do remember a time when they weren't.

^ I don't think it can be justified. I'm sure there's at least one poster here who would try to, if he were to come out from under his bridge. However I'm not surprised by the article.

There's a lot of fear-mongering going on over here since the Paris attacks, almost all of it politically motivated by right-wingers trying to win upcoming elections. Let's hope they don't succeed. In the meantime though, people seem to be eating it up.

My favorite line, right at the end.
"In a country with 330 million people and 310 million guns," he said, "the suggestion that the problem is we don't have enough guns available just doesn't seem to hold much weight."

It's despicable that three years after 20 first graders and 6 teachers were gunned down, the Republican controlled States still will not budge over gun laws. They are out their condemning the Obama administration for not catching the Muslim fiance for being allowed into the U.S. from Pakistan but they don't give a damn about how her boyfriend got all of the assault firearms. That is holy ground. Holier than thou Christians in love with their guns. What makes them any different than ISIS, al-Qaeda or the Taliban?

NBC news touched on this issue last night. 84% of US citizens support expanding background checks for gun purchases, yet congress still won't pass anything. It's blatantly obvious they're not 'working' for the people, only the NRA who funnel millions into their bank accounts to keep things this way. If you or I don't do our job, we get fired. These assholes in congress should get the boot.

If the right-wing really wants to 'fight terror', let's start by making it harder for extremists to get guns in our own country.

There's talk of President Obama using executive order to put stricter regulations on gun purchases. Of course there are people arguing that he has no right to do so.

Sharing a link I just read on a friend's fb feed. This is a politically correct way to express your displeasure when a civilian walks into a business establishment that you're in, and they are openly carrying an assault weapon.

This contains video narrative and printed narrative. I didn't want to 'share' it on my own wall, and have a nasty argument break out amongst my friends, but here we can manage to argue away with much less bad feelings.

That would be a great way to protest if everyone joined in. If I did that around here, I'd be the only one and I'd have the cops called on me for stiffing the bill. :P

It's a great idea though.

I live outside a rural community that's next to a university that attracts a large population of mid-east students.
Spoiler! :
Am I profiling? These days a profile has precedent.
I would have to say it depends largely on what the person looks like that comes in with the weapon, how the patrons would react. I would leave immediately without paying because I don't trust the mental stability of anyone that would do such a thing, no matter who they are. As I've pointed out before in this thread, you never know when someone might 'snap'. We used to call it "going postal". Remember those days?
