Well, third.

And Wales are 8th so it's clearly a flawed system.

How do they work them out then?

Is it to do with how many Kelloggs box tops a team has posted off to Mr Blatter, or something?

Wales are an amazing one place behind Brazil, who have won the World Cup or come in the last four, like, well, like more times than you can count on your fingers (and toes, probably).

I understand it with Belgium, as apart from shipping FIFA container loads of chocolate cookies, they have action to give them one of his acidic tongue lashings, if they don't comply.

It's a complicated algorithm involving recent results, with those results weighted by the relative rankings of the opposition. So if you're ranked highly, it's in your interest not to play friendlies against any other high-ranking teams. Or any low-ranking teams that might show you up. Competitive matches are weighted more highly than friendlies, so qualifiers play a big part.

Brazil's ranking dropped precipitously before the 2014 World Cup because, as hosts, they didn't have to play any qualifiers, so went about 2 years without any decent competitive football. That said, Germany thrashed them 7-1, so maybe their ranking also reflected reality!

I'm delighted that Wales are doing so well but they WILL be found out soon. They lost to Bosnia and still went through, which is great, but Ireland are looking at that play-off and thinking it's winnable, and based on rankings, Ireland are significantly poorer than Wales. But clearly they're not.

Wales won't get out of the group stages. They probably won't get a single point. Quote me on it. I would LOVE to be wrong.

Mexico are currently 27th.

Wonder where they'll be after this asteroid hits.

(Probably about half way across the Pacific.)

I love it when they have a "World Series" in that or baseball. It's almost as though some people believe any other countries actually play the games. Up until recently I'd have thought something similar about Rugby, but the fact all four nations in the semi final come from the Southern Hemisphere, I guess that disproves the theory, a bit.

There actually is a World Championship of American Football, believe it or not....the US team only uses players who haven't played in any pro league, but they've won it every time they've been in it. And baseball is a whole different story, though, there's a World Baseball Classic, which the US has never done better than 4th place in.
