large asteroid to hit earth on halloween!

This is the place for topical debate and discussion about anything in the world (non-Queen related).

I am glad I am dead. Once the wife sees the mess the asteriod made of the garden, she would have had me filling in holes for a month.
Come on you Tigers.

I know. That was the pic posted in the news from Nasa, I believe, then they had an animation or whatever of it spinning. It only looked like this from one side, thank goodness.

That fool comet was gone as of last night. And, NASA says it was a dead comet, not an asteroid as they thought at first. :-D

"A comet is usually characterized by its tail. A dead comet has lost all its ices and gases (responsible for producing this tail), leaving just a rocky core."

Well, speaking of things in the sky.....

Uh, was going to show a picture of the forecast map of it, but that ain't happening.

Anyway, it seems that there's a decent chance people in Michigan (and most of Canada from the looks of it) could be able to see the aurora borealis tonight, starting around 10pm Eastern time. I actually saw that here about 10 years ago, and it was pretty damn spectacular.

I saw white aurora Borealis before, and green ones. Truly sights I will never forget. :D
I don't think I can see it tonight, very cloudy and graty, but I hope others have the chance to see it :D . Thanks for the heads up. :D

I wish. We've been right on the edge of visibility here before but I've never caught a glimpse. I'll keep an eye out tonight just in case.

Man!!! Wish I could see that. To my north is a new subdivision of 2 story high houses then all the lights from downtown, then lights from the next town over. IDK if it's possible plus I would just have to stand out there. No windows on that side. :wall:

Auroras tonight, if you have clear weather!
Posted on November 2, 2015

The arriving auroras are late, but finally, as of this post at 545pm Alaska time, the data has picked up and we are headed for a show. The IMF needs to be aligned for auroras to happen. So even if the Kp level is high, other factors come into play before the aurora makes an appearance. It is a patient waiting game. But for sure, as of now, the data is look good (Bz is north as of this post but is fluctuating). Adjust your eyes. Turn off your car lights, dim or cover your dash, and dim your phone lights. Get away from streetlights. If you are at a hotel, you must get away from the security lights.

Alaska: Clouds in many areas. If it is clear, we will see a nice show. Look up!

Canada: Most of Canada will see auroras tonight. Western and middle Canada, look north! Eastern Canada, look north, northwest! Get away from city lights.

Northern states: East coast, look north, northwest. Midwest, look north and look low if not overhead. West coast, look north and get away from any city lights including highways. Go to an open area that is flat facing north.

Middle states, such as Iowa, Wyoming, Ohio: Watch the Kp levels. You need at least a Kp 6 with a south Bz. Kp 7 is predicted. This is possible tonight. Face north and you must have no light pollution. 30 miles from a city is still too close. If you can see stars and the milky way, that is a good hint you have no light pollution.

Your camera may pick up more details and more color than your eyes. Do not be afraid to change the settings on a camera to capture the northern lights. For beginner tips on taking photos see Camera Settings. You can practice your skills on the night sky without aurora. Some smartphones can capture the lights, but won’t be as nice of quality as you see on our Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/ABNFNSB/

Feel free to text me (Amy) anytime of the night for questions. No phone calls will be answered.

Good luck, everyone!
