Great footballer, but a bad example to set kids who looked up to him.

I guess that's true of my two nominations, Best and Zidane, as well. Maybe all true football geniuses are flawed in some way or other?

Sir Bobby Charlton, squeaky clean ;)

I guess the only way to properly judge is by actually seeing them play for your team week in week out. My nomination would be the great Davie Cooper ,a great role model, tragically taken from us too early while passing his skills on to the kids.

Three very... ummm... non-prejudiced reasons for Zizou not being the greatest player then, eh?

Always trust action to come up with some shit.

Cantona played much better than Zidane. Unfortunately, both had childish behaviours that led them to leave football earlier.

As a Palace fan, I despise Cantona for not being able to tell the difference between a Palace supporter and the football- and Maradonna was a filthy cheat, too- hand of God, my arse. My vote is for a player I met in 1995, Gordon Banks. An absolute gent, through and through.

Agreed about Maradona, a disgusting specimen of a human being, but Cantona did exactly what me a millions like me would have done to that scumbag in the crowd, even if Cantona should have known better, he shouldn't be verbally abused by anyone.

Listen son, let me explain this so a thick piss take like you might understand, Maradona was a skillful player, we all know that, but he was a gutless cheat, a cocaine addict and all round big head, millions of kids looked up to him, and he let them down in far bigger way than Cantona ever did.

I'm curious as to who was the ultimate "bad boy" of football.
Who was the John McEnroe of football?

The bad sport. The dirty player.

There's probably several candidates.

I really don't think we can compare footballers from different eras as those greats from the 40's, 50's 60's etc wouldn't be able to compete in modern times they way they did as the game has changed so much.

That'll probably be Vinnie Jones, but my vote would be Maradonna on principle. :P
