Who was the John McEnroe of football?

The bad sport. The dirty player.

There's probably several candidates.

Patrick Vieira ;)

The thing about Keane is that I always quite liked him, both as a player and a person. He's always been entertaining. His recent rant about how the England squad is shit and Capello is awesome was devastatingly accurate.

But charisma aside, he was a violent c*nt at times.

Christiano Ronaldo? Please... there's a difference between being the best player and thinking you're the best player. I always have to laugh when you see him realizing that he's on the big screens. Quite the peacock for sure.
I also cannot agree with most opinions about the current so-called superstars: Haven't seen anything decent from Messi, Torres or Ronaldo.

Best football player ever? I'd go with Maradonna.

(But Roger Milla has been astounding as well 8-) )

The best player ever is simply .......... PELE - He had it all : Good left ,foot good right, good in the air & hard as nails (the '66 world cup he was basically kicked out of the competition) - Best was brilliant but unfortunately unproven at World cup level,Maradona did indeed carry the '86 world cup Argie team but he was ALL left foot & as we all know a cheat.Englands' greatest ever player ? very close call between Bobby Charlton & Bobby Moore - with Moore just pipping it.

Some random thoughts on what the rest of you have said previously...

Bobby Charlton, ssqueaky clean??? *cough* FA Cup ticket tout *cough*

Roy Keane, dirtiest ever? You're having a laugh. Joey Barton is far worse now, and the likes of Steve McMahon, Mark Dennis, Graham Roberts would have put him to shame previously.

Cantona kicked a Palace supporter? Oh dear...read the court transcript and you'll conclude that he kicked a lying racist ABU - still shouldn't have kicked him, but I doubt Palace want to be associated with the individual...who has since had further convictions.

The best player I ever saw play (no point getting into historicals)?

Del Piero & Zidane together at Juventus were unreal.
Fat Ronaldo at his peak was pace, power and skill.
Cantona was a magician.
Thin Ronaldo is operating at a phenomenal level (as is Messi) at present, but it's a little early to judge either of them.

So, I'm going for Paul Scholes. Vision, accuracy, imagination, timing, and the best volleyer since Mark Hughes.

I think I'd rate Thierry Henry quite highly. And that's execeedingly hard work considering I follow the team just down the road from his old haunt.

I've always said Cruyff, but Messi is proving to be a world class player, lets see if we're still talking about him in 5 years.

probably the best 2 ever have been maradonna and pele, different styles though, pele was a team player and maradonna was an outstanding individual who could win a game on his own, for example would brazil have won the world cup in 1970 without pele YES - would argentina have won the world cup in 1986 without maradonna NO

Fair point, but also Maradonna stood out in what was regarded as a poor (ish) Argentinian team Whereas Pele stood out in a Brilliant Brazillian team.
