Football: Euro 2016

Postby buskersude » Fri Sep 05, 2014 6:41 pm

The first question is...

Will a pi⚡⚡ poor England beat Switzerland in Monday's qualifier?

Judging by the sham that was the Norway game ( a team that last qualified for a tournament in 1999) I'd say they don't have much of a chance without set pieces and Joe Hart playing.

Just to clarify its on Monday, 7:15 on ITV1

Portugal with some new faces, but let's see how the team does without Ronaldo and with a "small" but tricky team at the beggining of a qualifier. Let's see if they only start to fight for points in the last few rounds. Ours is a tricky group.

First half exactly as I expected, England uninspiring and look incapable of holding on to the ball.
Good head from the corner, but even if that had gone in it would not redeem England.
Yes it could win the game but I want to see an England team that can score goals in open play.

Nice to dream isn't it.

You wait all day for a bus... (then two come at once)

Well done, finally a couple of goals in open play. Better second half but we need work. Lots of work!
Wellbeck, two great goals but still needs to find his first touch. Great on the ball, hard worker but first touch is too often dire.

Switzerland 0 - 2 England

our national team manager but I wish everyone in our structure would go away. In Portugal clubs invest in unknown foreigner footballers from god knows where instead of developing and profiting from their own football schools. Italy are about to impose a limit on foreigner footballers per team. We should do the same.
And let's see who comes next. Some say Fernando Santos (who trained Greece).

Similar problems in the UK, so many top flight teams have so little home grown talent its affecting national performance.
The commentator of Monday's match said "you no longer need to be in a top 6 team anymore, to qualify to play for England, even players from lower divisions may get the chance" in reference to the overall percentage of English to foreign players.
I'm sure that's great for the players but not great news for the team.
I'm sure there used to be a limit on foreign players in a league team, but maybe I'm wrong.

England vs San Marino
Kick off 7:45 tonight.
Live on ITV1

Gonna be a walkover I guess, but won't do us any harm.
I don't expect to see a full 'A' team out there, so may be a good opportunity for new talent to show itself.

2 - 0 up at half time.
Poor performance as ever from England. Ok, give San Marino they are defending solidly for a team so part time, but so many bad passes among our boys. Its like they're using fairground rifles, with the sights somewhere off to the left, and down a bit!
No doubt SM will tire in the 2nd half, and we'll probably get a couple more goals, but if we were seriously a world class team, we would be up by 4 already.

Is it the manager? I hate the casual 'blame the manager ' routine, but there has to be a reason our team are not a team.

Looking forward to our eventual half a Euro 2016 Finals. As ever.

England 1 - 0 Estonia

Yet again no goals in open play.
Against yet another 'inferior' team.

Next match Nov. 15th.

Nine points from three matches, two of them away. Can't fault that too much. There's been times in England's history, when the performance has been there, but the result hasn't. So long as we don't fool ourselves into thinking we can win anything major, until the performance IS there, we'll be alright.

Oh of course, results are far more important than performance, but our performance lately indicates we'd not get those results against quality opposition.

My Dad always said "England may not win too many matches, but we are bloody hard to beat".
Not so much anymore I think. The first match we get against your France, Spain, Germany, Holland etc. we will be fully exposed as the weak side we are.

Amazing also how Rooney is just a few goals away from top England scorer, and yet only one world cup goal!

Before, whenever we had a chance of winning anything, we had one or two players (playmakers) who could literally change a game.

Go back as far as you want, Hoddle, Gasgoigne, Beckham. Someone who can move a ball thirty yards, and put it on a sixpence, nine times out of ten.

We haven't even got one of those on the horizon at the moment.
