Well, it's fun we get to play anyway, I guess.... No, I'm exaggerating. We have every chance to advance from this Group even if it will be difficult. Fermany is a definite loss, no question there, but I Think we could beat both Mexico and South Korea. Even with a draw against Mexico I Think we could still advance. There are no easy Groups in this WC. Except maybe for Russias Group, but who has the cash to get a group like that?

On the contrary, I'd say groups D and F are the only tricky ones. B and C are quite a walk in the park for the UEFA teams, and the rest have one or two strong teams and that's it.
John hated Hot Space. Frederick's favourite singer was not Paul Rodgers. Roger did not compose 'Innuendo.' Witness testimonies are often inaccurate. Scotland's not in England. 'Bo Rhap' hasn't got 180 voices.

The World Cup has a funny way of throwing up unexpected results, and there's always a shock for a so called big footballing nation, who had money on Cameroon beating Argentina in 1990? or Ireland to beat Italy in 1994? although both those losing countries made it to the final those years(but both lost) and there's been lots of other surprises down the years, and i dare say more to come in Russia. Lets just hope for a good finals, and hope they're not 'dogged ' by fan violence or drug cheats.
Oooh, you're a Cool Cat , Coming on strong with all the chit chat

The hosts are always in Pot 1. That means there’s no other ‘Pot 1’ team in Russia’s group.
They’ve still done quite well with the other 3 teams, but they were always going to get a favourable draw, with no fixing required. The same will happen to Qatar in 2022, and the same happened to both Japan and South Korea in 2002 and South Africa in 2010 (still wasn’t enough for them to get through though).

Suarez and Salah will tear Russia apart anyway.

Time to nitpick:

1930: Hosts were in Group 3
1954: Group 4
1958: Group 3
1962: Group 2
1982: Group 5
1986: Group 2 (since then called Group B instead)
1998: Group C
2002: Groups D and H (two hosts, neither was in Group A)

Counting 2018, there have been 19 world cups with a group phase, out of which eight (42.10%) did not feature the hosts in the first group (1 or A, depending).

Same for the hosts playing the opening match - it's common but not exclusive: having an opening match to begin with has only been a tradition since 1966, meaning 2018 will mark the fourteenth time it happens. Out of those fourteen opening games, eight (57.14%) did not feature the hosts, but the holders instead.

Edit: I apologise... you said 'Pot 1' not 'Group 1'. Regarding 'Pot 1' you're absolutely right.

:P

What I didn’t realise is that this is the first tournament in which all four pots are seeded. Prior to 2018, only Pot 1 was seeded, and the others were geographical.

If they turn up, France could win it. They look VERY strong - a squad of those who missed out could probably win it!

As long as Spain get spanked I don’t really care who wins. Hopefully there’ll be lots of goals and some great matches.

I agree, they have good shot. Most experts here in Sweden seem to have them battling it out with Brazil, Germany, Argentina and Spain for the gold.

Seems reasonable. Maybe Portugal, Belgium and Colombia as outsiders.

I can’t bear the thought of Ramos lifting the World Cup again.

Wasn't Casillas the captain when they won the World Cup? I mean, you may just mean lifting it when they pass it around... but the big moment is when the captain kisses and lifts the trophy, isn't it? And in that sense, Ramos has only done it with Real Madrid, but not as world champion (with a national squad).

I’m more than happy for it to stay that way!

2026 will be in Canada, Mexico and America. I wonder how Oompa Loompa shall deal with people crossing over for the games...
