I was disappointed when I heard the song because I knew that was probably the surprise.

Best one of the series so far. Capaldi has settled into the role, and seems to be channeling Tom Baker. Clara was thankfully not centre-stage or behaving like a cow-bag as well, and Frank Skinner was a pleasant surprise, acting-wise. Add in a smooth jazz version of DSMN, and I'm a happy armadillo-tank.

The Doctor offers to save a small number of humans from an impending natural catastrophe. That must have rung some pretty major bells in his memory...

Funny how the pages turn.
I didn't like Tennant, and didn't much like the stories till late on, when Catherine Tate joined.
I loved Matt Smith as the Doctor and loved the stories on the whole.
Now, I love Capaldi's take, but the stories so far have been a bit 'meh'.
They seem to be concentrating more on the relationship between Clara and Pink. Fair enough its interesting enough to watch the cynical, war ravaged Pink get to know the Doctor etc. but the individual episodes are what we want to relish.

Interesting though, that the 'beings' in yesterdays ep, are in every way the same as those in a trilogy of books written between around 1995 and 2010 by Phillip Pullman called His Dark Materials.

The books involve travelling between different Worlds or plains, and later in the books, a life-force is described exactly as we saw yesterday. Tiny lights floating free, conscious and intelligent, and essential to life.

So, it seems there has been a direct influence? Inspiration? Parody? Copy?

If I were to learn that Pullman was somehow involved then I'll take that back. :P

I am hoping that little shocker means a (late) turnaround for this series.
Now it should get serious.

So, I'm a year late, but that's how quick I get to see the new episodes. I loved Season 8. Loved Peter Capaldi more than I thought I would as the doctor (and I've loved Peter Capaldi since Local Hero). Loved Jenna Coleman a lot more than when she was opposite Matt Smith.

I went back and watched all her Season 7 episodes -- which made a lot more sense the second time round. Then I watched Season 8 again, except for the forest episode, which was too tedious to sit through again. And I found the finale just as heartbreaking the second time.

Now, I have a question. How does Orson Pink exist?

More than likely he did exist, in a potential future - at one point I thought that's what Clara's post-it-notes containing the phrase "three months" were hinting at.

But given Danny's death, that timeline no longer exists. It does in the memory of Clara and The Doctor, but it's gone from their reality now.

This is how you also explain things like the Earth's death being given several explanations in the show before now. Over 50 years, there's a lot of continuity holes pop up...

Well, this new season's off to a cack start. It's so repetitive and typical Moff, I've actually stopped caring about what happens any more.

Couldn't disagree more. That was the best episode since the Ponds left. I'm suddenly reinvigorated after spending the last three years feeling a bit bored of the whole thing.

Then again, I could watch Michelle Gomez in ANYTHING.
